In the summer of 1972, more than a hundred demonstrations, strikes and rooftop protests rocked British prisons, drawing public attention to the plight of the inmates. During the strikes Mike Fitzgerald was publicity officer for PROP (Preservation of the Rights of Prisoners). With this book he takes a hard, close look at British prisons today. He examines the penal policy which has given rise to these institutions and shows what life is like in prison, using, for the first time in Britain, letters smuggled out from inside. Against this background he relates the history of prison protest in Britain, comparing it with similar movements in the USA. He makes out a strong case, on both humanitarian and practical grounds, for a complete rethink of the way we treat prisoners.
