Hardly a day passes without some mention of Palestinians in the press, but they remain virtually unknown. Using Jean Mohr's photographs as a point of departure for this portrait of his people, Edward Said, a former member of the Palestinian National Council, charts the effects of the successive dispossessions Palestinians have suffered, from the creation of Israel to the fall of Beirut. He also discerns signs of a new Palestinian identity, based not on exile and victimhood but on persistence, hope and an awakening sense of community.
