Since the publication of the first edition of this text, the field of cryogenics has continued its rapid growth and development. Although the effort expended in space exploration and the corresponding large use of cryogenic fluids by NASA in space vehicles has declined somewhat from the peak years during the 1960s, application of cryogenics has spread into a variety of areas of science and engineering. The 1970s could be called a 'decade of diversification' for cryogenic engineering.
