One of the largest of the NZ Army unit histories published following WWII this one, dealing with the artillery component of the Second New Zealand Division, was also one of the last of a prolific series. The gunners supported other arms of the Division in all its operations and was a key component in operations from beginning to end of the Kiwi contribution to the conflict With its origins dating back to late September 1939, when the first troops were assigned as gunners, a small party of these accompanied the First Echelon to Ecypt where the Division was to assemble. Subsequently NZ artillerymen and their guns served in the UK, Greece, Crete, through all the North African campaigs, to Syria and finally to Italy. This account follows the artillerymen through all these commitments, including the despatch of some of the Gunners from Italy to become the first NZ oocupation troops in Japan and founder members of Jayforce. The war-time cost was high with more than 650 officers and men killed or died of wounds, about 2000 wounded, nearly 700 were POWs, 100 wounded became POWS and 60 died while on active service. First edition of 1966, 796 pages including two appendices, roll of honour, summary of casualties, honours and awards, index, colour art frontis, 125 b/w illustrations in four collations, mainly photos with some art, nine fold-out colour tone maps, all in excellent order with few misalignments, 79 in text maps.
