Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was an Italian writer, poet, and correspondent of Petrarch, and an important Renaissance humanist. Born in the town of Certaldo, he became so well known as a writer that he was sometimes simply known as "the Certaldese" & one of the most important figures in the European literary panorama of the fourteenth century. Boccaccio, Dante Alighieri & Petrarch, together, form the so-called "Three Crowns" of Italian literature. He is remembered for being one of the precursors of humanism, of which he helped lay the foundations in the city of Florence. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was a late Dutch Baroque painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist. During his career, Hough produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. The Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeran (1735) was a well known emblem book and sourcebook for classical mythology and its iconography. Some critiqued Hooghe's drawings & felt that despite an enormous talent, Hooghe engraved shameful subjects that were a disgrace to the profession. Others, however, refer to Hooghe as the first great modern graphic satirist. Incredible engravings, present well. Reading copies. ***FORN-SHELF-0467-BB-2410-HKREV220.
