194 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. Mostly color photographs. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. More than any other center fire cartridge, the mention of the .600 nitro express draws interest whenever and wherever riflemen and hunters gather. It was the biggest. It was the most powerful. Its rifles were the heaviest of the nitro era. It's energy in foot-pounds exceeded even that of the might 4-bore. It could stop a charging elephant better than anything else of its day. Regrettably, little was written of the .600 in the vintage years by the original users. It seems most hunters were not writers nor were they riflemen. They wrote of the hunt and rarely wrote of the rifles they used except in passing. Added to this, was the simple fact that there were so few .600s made. Then it was no surprise there is so little information in print. Over the years gun writers touched on the .600 as they did on double rifles in general. Elmer Keith owned one and wrote of it. The occasional article in the generic firearms magazines sparks an interest - but little new data. Hopefully, this book will answer questions for which generations of double riflemen have sought answers, plus it will bring widely dispersed information together. Also, it will provide interesting reading on the most talked about of the English Elephant-stopping rifle cartridges from those that used the .600 in the vintage years. All the technical daa is here: serial numbers from many of the makers, photos of over 30 vintage rifles, ballistic information both vintage and modern, as well as bullet, headstamp, and box variations.
