He was merry and keen in regard to all the activities of school and college life. Cheerful and well liked by all, he gave the gift of his intimacy to but few. Thus, Janeway went through college, leaving behind an enviable reputation in those courses that prepare for a medical career, for he early knew what his profession was to be, and, alive to the responsibility of one who bears a distinguished name and also because he believed in doing all important things well, he worked with characteristic diligence and enthusiasm. Those who taught him could outline his future. It was, however, in his medical school course that he really shone. He was the first or second man in a singularly good class and, by virtue of this fact, became eligible to compete for a number of prizes of very considerable money value. Then he did a characteristic thing, the reason for which was only surmised and of which he never spoke to any one. He did not compete for the prizes. It was quite plain that he would have been successful and he must have known it for he judged fairly his own abilities though he never overestimated them. But he knew there were others who needed the reward more than he. Such consideration for others was not an isolated example. It was a constant and conspicuous trait of a generous spirit, exhibited throughout his whole life. He served through his hospital years with great credit and then began the practice of medicine with his father. It is seldom that any one is fortunate enough to work under such inspiration and guidance. Dr. Janeway, the elder, was a medical man in a generation.
