Therefore as engineering expands into new fields now opening before it, the conception that character, judgment, efficiency and understanding of men are no less necessary than technical knowledge and skill will become more and more impelling and it will become more and more essential that schools of engineering pay greater attention to the effect of their work on the personal development of the students." As has been suggested, many are the factors which enter into making the prescribed course in written and oral expression of ideas on contemporary thought the means of broadening the technical student's horizon so that he may become a citizen of the world. Many and far-reaching are the results both in college and in the world. The effecting of the changes which are going to make the English course in the future a still greater opening for giving attention to humanistic values depends upon many things--the right relation and co-operation between the teachers of English and the Engineering College; a tolerant, well-poised, sane and open minded rationalism; a sense of relative values; the long view on training; good teaching and the recognition of good teaching; an appreciation of the human values involved; a vision of the place of the engineering profession in modern life. The English course can be more than a chore; it can be a guide to the engineering student "in developing an attitude toward life and a philosophy of living that will enable him to judge rightly as to the things humanity considers most worth while."
