The Master of the Trebon Altarpiece was a painter active in Prague in the fourteenth century and one of the most important gothic artists of the international style. He is named for his most famous work, a triptych depicting the death and resurrection of Christ, from an altar in a church in Trebon, a medieval town in the southern Czech Republic. Today, the masterpiece is in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Because little is known about this artist, scholars have ascribed to the Master various pieces of art, speculating about their dates of origin, their chronology, and their artistic and ideological points of departure. Art historian Jan Royt’s extensive scientific research into the Master of the Trebon Altarpiece attempts to definitively identify and contextualize this unknown artist’s oeuvre. However, what there might have been of woven wall hangings on the subject has all but disappeared, with the exception of a modern single-panel Aubusson and the set of seven hangings which constitutes the subject of this book. The Brussels Tristan Tapestries have never before been studied as a series. The purpose of this monograph is to bring to light a rarely seen work of art and to apprise specialists of iconography, literature and myth of its relevance and uniqueness. The chapters deal with the detailed analysis of the set and its meaning as a whole, the reconstitution of the history of its ownership, the place of this particular version in the verbal and figurative traditions to which it refers and the role of this ‘tenture’ in the corpus of the Tristan myth. Since the exhibitions of 2002 and 2007 at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts, woven tapestry has been given place of prominence; collections have been exhumed from storage and revealed to the public, accompanied by handsome catalogues. A Dutch Italianate, Adriaen Van de Velde represents a point of artistic cross-communication across borders, fusing agricultural landscapes in Holland with mythological Arcadian scenes in Italian settings. He died at the early age of 35, and yet he produced a great number of masterpieces that earned him tremendous posthumous fame in the 18th and 19th centuries, when he was one of the most sought-after names among collectors in Germany, France and England. Compared to Mozart's chamber music by the renowned art historian Wolfgang Stechow (1896-1974), Van de Velde's works are delicate and carefully composed and demonstrate his mastery of lighting effects as well as the human figure. His father Willem van de Velde the Elder and brother of the Younger were both marine painters, who in the winter of 1672-73 moved from Leiden to England to work in the service of King Charles II. Adriaen, by contrast, almost certainly never traveled outside his native country and chose to paint landscapes rather than seascapes. His meadows, Italianate views, beaches, dunes, forests, winter scenes and portraits in landscape settings and are among the very best that the Dutch Golden Age has produced. Moreover, the artist's drawings are widely considered to be a high point in 17th-century Dutch draughtsmanship. Yet despite his fame in previous centuries and the exquisite quality of his work, there has never been an exhibition devoted to the artist. Despite his status as the seminal Netherlandish painter of the 16th century, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) remains an elusive artist: fewer than forty paintings are ascribed to him. Of these, a dozen are cabinet-sized. These small-scale works offer key insights as they often bear a personal significance for the artist and were sometimes given as gifts to friends and patrons. Presenting these works together for the first time is not only an extraordinary and unprecedented opportunity but it will be extremely revealing, considering their unusual nature in both Bruegel’s oeuvre and 16th-century art in general. Monochrome painting in shades of grey was a mainstay of Netherlandish art from the early 15th century, most often present on the wings of altarpieces and preparatory sketches for engravings. In contrast, Bruegel’s panels constitute one of the earliest and rare examples of independent cabinet pictures in grisaille, created for private contemplation and enjoyment. This seemingly austere type of painting has often been imbued with religious or political significance. On a purely artistic level, it enabled the painter to showcase his skill by limiting his palette. The publication, which includes a technical investigation of the three panels, will provide the opportunity to reassess the practical aspects of the grisaille technique and the many ways in which this effect was achieved.
