Leather. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. First edition. The first edition of this scarce book of poetry by Ernest Dowson, in the original decorative vellum. The first edition. In the publisher's original gilt vellum designed by Irish poet and artist Althea Gyles, best known for her cover designs for W. B. Yeats, with her signature 'A in a heart' to the rear board. This work features a collection of prose and verse from English poet, novelist and short story writer. Ernest Dowson is best known for writing his poem 'Non Sum Qualis eram Bonae Sub Regno Cynarae' which featured the line 'gone with the wind' to which the novel by Margaret Mitchell was named after, as she felt connected to another line from the poem; 'Far away, faintly sad sound I wanted'. In the publisher's original vellum. Externally generally smart with marks to the boards, fading to the spine, slight rubbing to the joints and spine and to the head of the rear, bumping to the extremities and very minor closed tears to the head of the spine. Light offsetting to the endpapers and scattered spotting to the rear. Internally firmly bound with roughly cut and generally bright pages with light age toning to the extremities to the odd page and the odd mark and spot, heavier to the front and rear blanks. Very Good. book.

Vellum. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. First edition. The first edition of Ernest Dowson's uncommon, limited edition collection of poems, in a binding designed by Aubrey Beardsley. An uncommon, limited edition work, with this being one of only three hundred 'small paper' copies printed on handmade paper. In the publisher's original paper vellum, with gilt detailing designed by illustrator and author Aubrey Beardsley, a friend of Dowson.Dowson was a poet, novelist and writer associated with the late nineteenth century Decadent movement. A member of the Rhymers' Club, he was a contributor to literary magazines such as Beardsley's 'The Yellow Book', and 'The Savoy'.This was Dowson's first poetry collection, and features his poem 'Non Sum Qualis eram Bonae Sub Regno Cynarae'. Margaret Mitchell, touched by the 'far away, faintly sad sound I wanted' in the line 'I have forgot much, Cynara! gone with the wind', chose the line as the title of her novel 'Gone with the Wind'.In a letter to publisher Leonard Smithers upon Dowson's early death, Oscar Wilde wrote 'I hope bay leaves will be laid on his tomb, and rue and myrtle too, for he knew what love is'. In the publisher's original paper vellum boards, with gilt detailing. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Back strip significantly age toned, with boards lightly age toned and with light handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright. Very Good. book.

First edition, one of 300 copies (numbered in hand as no. 14) of a total edition of 330. 8vo., original boards decorated with a design by Aubrey Beardsley. Uncut. London: Leonard Smithers, Minor wear to the board edges, more marked on the spine than elsewhere and a little uneven discolouration, but a very good copy of the first binding state, with an important association, bearing as it does the bookplate of John Gray and with the later small stamp of Hawkesyard Priory, where many of Gray's books trickled down after having been bequeathed to the Dominican Fathers of Edinburgh. The bookplate of Monsignor Vincent Lloyd-Russell of the Mission of San Juan Capistrano in California (founded in 1776) adds an interesting later dimension, as does its yet later ownership by Robert Booth, whose remarkable collection of Leonard Smithers was sold in 1996. The author's first volume of poetry, containing most of his best known work, and sent to Gray at the author's request. Dowson was in Brittany at the time of publication and wrote to Gray ?This is to tell you that my volume is, or will be, sent to you; it should be out by this time. I'm afraid I have written an indiscreet 'preface', although it seems to me very exquisite: - indiscreet I mean in that it will give an handle to the little yapping puppies of the press to émender me.? This meant that Gray and the others of his friends that Smithers sent copies to saw the book before Dowson himself did, and when he finally did get his copies he was appreciative of the taste with which the book was presented, writing to Smithers initially that ?My compliments and thanks for the luxury with which you have encadré my lucubrations. The cover is really very beautiful? and shortly after ?I am more delighted with their appearance than I can say. Beardsley's binding block is admirable - simplex munditiis, and yet most sumptuous.? Beardsley's design is indeed a minor masterpiece of restrained elegance, despite the fact that the artist was no more a fan of Dowson than of Wilde: Adams quotes Beardsley's quip that the roughly Y-shaped design meant ?Why was this book ever written?? Hayward, 307; Nelson, LS, 1896.9, Lasner, AB, 106. Very good copy.
