She has identified this as from ÒUncle TomÕs Cabin. pg. 197 [volume II].Ó This leaf is a little browned and was removed from backing by a conservator, whose detailed report is included. Original purple vertical-fine-ribbed cloth, spines lettered in gilt, front cover vignette stamped in gilt, other decoration stamped in blind, cream endpapers. Spines faded as usual (the purple dye fugitive in light), a couple of minor chips at spine ends, a few marks to boards and occasionally internally, but an excellent unrestored copy in original condition. Title vignettes and 6 wood-engraved plates. Early pencilled ownership inscriptions of Mrs Ruth D Wilson to front blanks. First edition of probably the most socially influential American book ever published. "Even before the publication of the serial [in the abolitionist newspaper The National Era] the Boston publisher John P. Jewett had expressed an interest in publishing [it] in book form. The two volumes, issued both in brown cloth and paper wrappers, appeared on 20 March 1852, two instalments before the conclusion of the serial in The National Era. The first printing of five thousand copies was exhausted in a few days and a second printing of the same size, indicated by 'ten thousand' on the title-page, was completely disposed of by the end of March. The sale of the book was indeed phenomenal In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell the social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM). Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly
Descripción: Boston: John P. Jewett, 1852, 1852. A sharp copy in original publisher's cloth of the first edition of one of the most important works of American literature. With contemporary ownership inscriptions on the front pastedowns dated only 6 days after the book's publication, "Lucy Curtis / Newton, March 26, 1852" (BAL notes that Uncle Tom's Cabin was advertised for March 20). "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-ninteenth-century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life.' Whatever its weakness as a literary work -- structural looseness and excess of sentiment among them - the social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than of any book before or since" (PMM) First edition (with Hobart & Robbins on the copyright pages). 8vo. Illustrated vignette on title pages and 6 plates by Hammatt Billings. Descripción: 1852. [In Two Volumes.] Boston: John P. Jewett & Company / Cleveland, Ohio: Jewett, Proctor & Worthington, 1852. Original blind-stamped brown cloth with front cover vignettes in gilt. First Edition, first issue (without mention of any "thousand" of copies on the title pages). The first printing consisted of 5000 copies, but within ten days that printing was sold and another 5000 copies (with "Tenth Thousand" on the titles) were printed; within six months the total was up to 120,000. ~Mrs. Stowe had been inspired to write this novel by the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, in which "all good citizens" (Northern as well as Southern) were commanded to assist Federal agents in capturing runaway slaves and returning them to their masters. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN was first published serially in the abolitionist periodical "National Era," from June 1851 to April 1852; the author had originally intended to complete the work in a few issues, but strong public interest encouraged her to continue it for ten months. This book was published in March 1852, prior to the end of serialization, and quickly became a "runaway" sensation. Certainly this book, in combination with the Fugitive Slave Act, was a major catalyst of the American Civil War -- as Lincoln himself implied, when he met Mrs. Stowe.~This copy is in Blanck's binding "B," the standard cloth one with most ornamentation in blind but with the front cover vignettes in gilt; the cloth color is brown (black and purple were also used, without precedence). Binding "A" is in wrappers, and binding "C" is cloth with all ornamentation in gilt -- "sequence, if any, not established," though the deposit copy was in this binding "B."~The volumes have very slight wear at the spine ends (much less than usual -- often the spine ends are largely chipped away), and there is occasional light foxing within (as usual); a few gatherings stand slightly proud in Vol II, but the volumes remain tight. Though copies of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN are out there, we don't see many in this condition. Blanck 19343; Merle Johnson "High Spot" of American Literature -- though he says "These books are of such paramount historical importance that it is difficult to evaluate them as literature.". When ABRAHAM LINCOLN first met HARRIET BEECHER STOWE in 1862, he said, "So this is the little lady who is responsible for this big war" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN or, Life Among the Lowly by HARRIET BEECHER STOWE, BOSTON: John P. Jewett & Co., 1852. RARE TRUE FIRST EDITION. FIRST PRINTING. 2 volumes, 8vo. 8.0" x 5.25" inches. (LxB). Pp. x, (1), 14-312 + 3 plates; iv, 5-322 pages + 3 plates. True first issue with "Hobart & Robbins" slug-imprint on copyright pages of both volumes. Original publisher's preferred purple-brown cloth gift binding, gilt lettered spine, gilt vignette to center of front boards, blind stamped ornamentation on back boards. There are title page vignettes and three black on white engravings by Hammett Billings in each volume. The gift bound covers have gilt stamped designs that is the same as the title page vignette, plus fine blind stamped border decorations. The gilt on the covers & spines are still bright. Three thousand copies were sold the first day, within a few days ten thousand copies had gone, and thereafter eight presses running day and night were barely able to keep pace with the demand for it. Within a year three hundred thousand copies were sold. A classic work. Complete as issued. Because Uncle Tom's Cabin so polarized the abolitionist and anti-abolitionist debate, some claim it to be one of the causes of the Civil War. When ABRAHAM LINCOLN first met HARRIET BEECHER STOWE in 1862, he said, "So this is the little lady who is responsible for this big war". "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life'.the social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Uncle Tom's Cabin is the only American novel to be included in Printing and the Mind of Man. BAL 19343. Grolier, 100 American, 61. Grolier, 100 English, 91. Hildreth, p. 8. Printing and the Mind of Man 332. Uncle Tom's Cabin was immediately successful upon its publication. "Within a decade after its publication Uncle Tom's Cabin had become the most popular novel ever written by an American. there is substantial evidence that the book precipitated the American Civil War" (Downs, Books That Changed America, 108). No work of fiction ever spread more quickly throughout the reading community or awakened a greater amount of public feeling. It was read by everybody, learned and unlearned, high and low, for it was an appeal to universal human sympathy, and the kindling of this spread the book like wildfire. At first it seemed to go by acclamation. But this was not altogether owing to sympathy with the theme. I believe that it was its power as a novel that carried it largely. The community was generally apathetic when it was not hostile to any real effort to be rid of slavery. This presently appeared. At first there were few dissenting voices from the chorus of praise. But when the effect of the book began to be evident it met with an opposition fiercer and more personal than the great wave of affectionate thankfulness which greeted it at first. The South and the defenders and apologists of slavery everywhere were up in arms. It was denounced in pulpit and in press, and some of the severest things were said of it at the North. The leading religious newspaper of the country, published in New York, declared that it was "anti-Christian." The ascertained translations of Uncle Tom's Cabin are into twenty-three tongues, namely: Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Flemish, French, German, Hungarian, Illyrian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, modern Greek, Russian, Servian, Siamese. Grolier American 100, 61; Printing and the Mind of Man 332: "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life.' The social impact of [the novel] on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since." When Abraham Lincoln met its author at the White House in 1862, he is said to have exclaimed, "So this is the little lady who made this big war?" This first printing of five thousand copies was exhausted in a few days, and the book eventually sold more copies in the 19th century than another book except the Bible. Perhaps the most influential work of American literature and a cornerstone of 19th century literature. The initial printing sold out immediately upon publication and the book went through continual reissue for years after its introduction. Nicely illustrated editions bound and decorated as with this copy have become increasingly difficult to find. For Harriet Beecher Stowe, the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an evil affront to humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the pro-slavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life. In either case, the impact of UNCLE TOM¿S CABIN on the society of the United States of America was probably greater than any book published before or since. PMM Stowe presented her story in the style of popular works of the era [melodramatically]--and with religious undertones, but the themes of the novel--the breaking up of families, violence, the naive idea of a return to Africa, and the question of slaves agency in this oppression--are historically significant. Stowe had not only witnessed incidents like the ones described in her novel, but had long been concerned about slavery, having read the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Louis Clark, as well as the abolitionist tracts of L.M. Child and Theodore Weld, and in 1850, when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, she began writing Uncle Tom¿s Cabin. [The Fem GT Lit in Eng] The Fugitive Slave Act, in combination with her book, were arguably the catalysts for the Civil War, as even Lincoln implied upon meeting Stowe. The initial printing sold out immediately, of the roughly 5000 copies of the first issue printed, 3000 are believed to have sold on the very first day. Nº de ref. de la librería 000273

Grolier American 100, 61; Printing and the Mind of Man 332: "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-nineteenth century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life.' The social impact of [the novel] on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since." When Abraham Lincoln met its author at the White House in 1862, he is said to have exclaimed, "So this is the little lady who made this big war?" The first printing of five thousand copies was exhausted in a few days, and the book eventually sold more copies in the 19th century than any other book except the Bible. This printing was likely a month or so after the initial printing. Small address label on the front endpaper of the first volume; light pencil signatures in each volume. Occasional staining but generally quite clean. Bindings slightly cocked with minor edgewear but nice examples. A Very Good set in the uncommon gift binding. Nº de ref. de la librería 012900

A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin; Presenting the Original Facts and Documents upon which the Story is Founded. Together with Corroborative Statements Verifying the Truth of the Work
Descripción: John P. Jewett & Co. Cleveland, Ohio, 1853. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good-. First Edition. Tipped in, mounted to a larger piece of paper, is a slip of paper (5" x 1 1/4") SIGNED by H. B. Stowe (someone has penned the author's name underneath the signature). Original green cloth, with blindstamped borders and title on both front and reasr panels, and gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. The cloth is rubbed, boards exposed at the corners, and the spine ends are frayed with short tears. The pages have some waviness (not from any moisture, but rather from the thin quality of paper used), and there is the occasional soiling. Even with the the wear to the cloth this is a near very good copy of Harriet Beecher Stowe's defense against the attacks and criticism of her work, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Signed.
