Descripción: Geo. M. Smith & Co, Boston, 1873. Estado de conservación: Very Good-. 2nd Edition. 8vo xiii [3] 303pp. Later issue of the Smith edition (without "The End" on p age 303 at end of text), with One Hundred and Ten Illustrations from the Osgood edition. Re-backed spine, cover and brown end papers repaired professionally. This copy has all page edges gilt -- a deluxe feature for which the original buyer paid extra. Overall very good- condition. According to Judith Myers (Jules Verne: A Bibliography), the second edition is preferable since the first had damaged type. Unlike the 1st British or U.S. editions, the Smith edition has "Seas" rather than "Sea" on the cover. Nº de ref. de la librería 913

Descripción: 1873. or, The Marvellous and Exciting Adventures of Pierre Aronnax. translated from the French. One Hundred and Ten Illustrations. (Edition of James R. Osgood & Co.) Sold Only by Subscription. Boston: Geo. M. Smith & Co., 1873. Originial green cloth decorated in gilt and black. First American Edition, second and usual "Smith" issue, of Verne's famous tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Considerable confusion surrounds the relationship of the two Boston 1873 title pages that can appear for this title -- the James R. Osgood & Company title page, and this usual Geo. M. Smith & Co. one (which refers to the Osgood one and indicates "sold by subscription only"). The bindings of the two are nearly identical (the Osgood binding reads ".UNDER THE SEA" and bears a jellyfish in the center of the front cover, whereas the Smith binding reads ".UNDER THE SEAS" and has Captain Nemo using a sextant on the front cover). Clearly the Osgood one is a bit earlier and is much scarcer: supposedly only about fifteen copies were known to exist, but we have handled about that many of them over the past two decades (all between $12,000 and $29,500), so our guess would be more like fifty. One theory is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue, and that the Smith one, being much less scarce, must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire.~This copy does not have gilt page edges -- a deluxe feature for which the original buyer paid extra (not an issue point of precedence); the majority of copies does not have all edges gilt. On the final page of text, "THE END" is absent; some copies have "THE END," some do not, and a few have it partially printed -- indicating that this is merely a question of type slippage during a single print run, and not an "issue point" as some dealers have asserted.~As for condition, this is a very good-plus copy, with the decorative front cover unusually clean and bright; the gilt on the spine is a little rubbed, there are a few tiny nicks in the spine ends, and the rear endpaper is cracked. Descripción: Geo. M. Smith Co., Boston, 1873. Decorative Cloth. Estado de conservación: Very Good. du Neuville, Alphonse Marie;Riou, Edouard Ilustrador. First Edition. Boston: Geo. M. Smith, 1873. Osgood & Co." on title page. 8vo. 303 pp. Green cloth binding with decorative black and gold designs and titles, all edges gilt (a scarce feature of this edition). The first edition, first printing of a very early reprint, taken from the Osgood plates (first American edition). The book has been carefully professionally restored. Evidence of previous scrapes and edgewear, some material missing from ffep has been replaced, hinges have been renewed. Occasional foxing and slight bow to front board. Spine a bit rubbed and faded. Descripción: Geo. M. Smith & Co., Boston, 1873. Hard Cover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. No Jacket. First Thus. First thus, second state. 'The End' does not appear on p. 303. No jacket. Professionally recased, tear on binding edge of front endpaper & flyleaf professionally repaired. Ink name & date on title page, same name in pencil on recto of frontispiece and on owner bookplate on front endpaper, small dealer sticker on rear endpaper. Boards exceptionally well preserved with only minor wear to corners. 1873 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author! xiii, 303 pp. Original green cloth, gilt & black titles, gilt decorations including Captain Nemo with sextant, brown endpapers. Translated from Verne's original French, with 110 engraved illustrations. One of Verne's most well-known works, and a pioneering work of science fiction. The first American edition was printed in Boston by James Osgood - this edition is now quite scarce because nearly all copies were lost in a warehouse fire. This second American edition came in several variants, all in green cloth with the word 'Sea' pluralized in the title, and with the image of Captain Nemo (several Osgood bindings have a jellyfish instead).
