Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. On August 7, 1970, a revolt by Black prisoners in a Marin County courthouse stunned the nation. In its aftermath, Angela Davis, an African American activist-scholar who had campaigned vigorously for prisoners' rights, was placed on the FBI's "ten most wanted list." Captured in New York City two months later, she was charged with murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy. Her trial, chronicled in this "compelling tale" ( Publishers Weekly ), brought strong public indictment. The Morning Breaks is a riveting firsthand account of Davis's ordeal and her ultimate triumph, written by an activist in the student, civil rights, and antiwar movements who was intimately involved in the struggle for her release. First published in 1975, and praised by The Nation for its "graphic narrative of [Davis's] legal and public fight," The Morning Breaks remains relevant today as the nation contends with the political fallout of the Sixties and the grim consequences of institutional racism. For this edition, Bettina Aptheker has provided an introduction that revisits crucial events of the late 1960s and early 1970s and puts Davis's case into the context of that time and our own-from the killings at Kent State and Jackson State to the politics of the prison system today. This book gives a first-hand account of the worldwide movement for Angela Davis's freedom and of her trial. It offers a unique historical perspective on the case and its continuing significance in the contemporary political landscape.

Paperback, 7 x 4 1/4 inches, 224 pp. Photo of Angela Davis with "Afro" hair style on the front cover. VG+ (moderate browning of paper; clean and tight). "This book does not condemn nor glorify.it tells the absorbing true story of a woman who at 27 has regenerated the American Communist Party, glamorized the Black Panthers, eloquently turned-on students of all shades, and may be executed by the people of California. Who is angela Davis? High priestess of revolution or martyr for political and intellectual freedom." "The author believes there are still too many people who might get violent over this book! Therefore, he must remain.THE PROFESSOR. While Angela was being fired, he was teaching at another large California University. He received his law degree in the South eleven years ago and served as a U.S. Senate Aide when the civil rights movement was fomenting. He has lectured and published extensively in law journals and magazines, and appeared on national television." Foreward by Melvin M. Belli. Octavo (17.5cm); photo-illustrated wrappers; yellow edge-staining; [8],9-224pp. Trivial wear to extremities, gentle sunning to spine, with some faint foxing to upper edge of textblock, and the usual tanning to the text edges; Very Good+. Hastily-written, pseudonymous volume on Davis, repeating "every right wing assertion about Ms. Davis being a black terrorist that had ever been issued. The following year, a month after she was found not guilty of providing the guns used by Jonathan Jackson in August 1970 to take hostages from a courtroom, Charles Ashman produced an instant paperback book The People vs. Angela Davis, which he attempted to peddle to the African-American community. Ashman revealed that he was "The Professor," claiming that he was forced to use that pseudonym for safety. He contends militant blacks surrounding Angela would retaliate against any "honkie" they caught writing about her" (Major, Reginald. "Stealth History: A Political Process. A Review Essay of The Shadow of the Panther by Hugh Pearson and The Rise and Fall of California's Radical Prison Movement by Eric Cummins" in The Black Scholar, Vol.24, No.4 (Fall 1994), p.39).
