Librería: Ken Sanders Rare Books, ABAA, Salt Lake City, UT, Estados Unidos de America
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Fifth edition. 309pp. Small octavo [19.5cm]. Brown cloth over boards. Title and decoration stamped in black and gilt on spine and front board. Mild bumping to extremities. Textblock a bit toned. Hinges beginning to weaken. Meta Lander was an advocate of the emerging temperance movement. Though this book focuses on the consequences of tobacco use, she states " I desire to say that, while I have taken tobacco for my text, I have included all other narcotics." Though penned in a bygone era (doctors still prescribed tobacco for multiple ailments) many of Lander's criticisms are backed by modern medicine. Others have not stood the test of time.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. Fourth Edition. This copy has a copyright date of 1885, but it is a stated Fourth Edition (probably more accurately a printing, since a new edition implies added or altered material). The paper on the hinges is cracked, but the binding itself is sound. The boards are a bit faded, with wear at the spine, typical of this vintage of book. There is a stamping on the front flyleaf from a WCTU chapter, but no markings in the text or signs of use. This is definitely an anti-tobacco tract, but it contains a lot of detail and anecdote, and there is one section called Tobacco Benefits, although this may be facetious. Included with this purchase are two small items found with the book--a little book from Rodale Press, published in 1954, which reproduces James I's A Counter-Blaste to Tobacco. The covers are lightly worn, but the illustrations are charming. Also included is a small paperback, dated 1957, by Harry Greene, chairman of the Dept. of Pathology at Yale, and published by Coward-McCann. This book, Science Looks at Smoking, absolves tobacco of all the nasty things it has been blamed for. The pages are tanned, but the book is sound.
