Stevenson (1850-94) was the great Scottish essayist, poet, and author of novels, children's, and travel books. He studied law but never practiced. His entire life was devoted to literature, much of which is contained in the present works. Stevenson was regarded as a writer of power and originality with a strong moral vision. Three volumes (3, 7 & 16 ) have had neat repairs to headcaps; part of headcap missing volume 21 - barely visible from front ;some gilt decoration on raised bands rubbed off; spines uniformly faded to mid- brown; a little foxing to text block edges; else a very good set. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Good+. 28 volumes. Edinburgh Edition of 1,035 copies. This set being #222. Red three quarter Moroccan leather bound covers are worn at the corners. There is also faint evidence in the lower block of the spines where at one time there was a library label. Were it not for these 2 issues, the covers are in outstanding condition. 5 raised bands on spines. Gilt borders on spines and covers. Red satin cloth boards. Boards and spines are straight. Bindings are tight. Marbled paste downs and end sheets. A plate on the front paste downs that reads: "Blevins Davis, Trianon Place, Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, Colorado." On the back end sheet and paste down are remnants of library pockets that have been removed. On the lower part of the title page there is a very, very small stamp " College of St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Library". Pages clean and appear unread. Gilt top edges. Untrimmed fore edges. Limited Edition. This Edinburgh Edition consists of one thousand and thirty-five copies all numbered. No. 847. The Edinburgh Edition is missing Romances, Volume I. The Appendix volume has been modified, withthe facsimile ephemera bound in. The supplementary volumes consist of: Letters to Family and Friends: 2 vols, Methuen, 1899 (with a supplement of 'Additional Letters' included); the Life, by Graham Balfour: 2 vols, Methuen, 1901; Stevensoniana, edited by J. A. Hammerton: Grant Richards, 1903; and the Bibliography by Prideaux: Frank Hollings, 1903. Condition: In a uniform red cloth binding. Externally, slightly rubbed and bumped, with slight chipping and marks to the spine labels. Internally, generallyfirmly bound, with occasional foxing, that varies in intensity between volumes. With bookplates to most of the front pastedowns. Some bookplates have had blank paper laid down over them. The red dye has run on to the top of the page margins of the Balfour volumes.
