Octavo, pp. [1]-2 [leaf of ads dated "May, 1838"] [iii-v] vi-vii [viii] [9] 10-201 [202: blank] [1]-14 [ads], fly leaf at front, original pebble grain blue muslin, printed paper label affixed to spine panel, untrimmed. First edition. Poe's first prose book and his only book-length work of fiction, one of the nineteenth century's most fantastic short novels. "A novel of horrendous sea adventure, followed by extraordinary experiences in the Antarctic . Critically, Pym has generally been held in low esteem, but this is probably because of the full-blown sensation approach of the first part of the novel, which retails more horrors in one short voyage than would have taken place in a sailor's lifetime or more. But considered within the aesthetics of BLACKWOOD'S, it is a fine achievement. As for the second, puzzle section, it remains successfully puzzling after a century and a half." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1784. "Clearly, THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM has exerted a powerful influence on its readers, and its entrancing ending in particular has aroused considerable interest. The novel has become a frequent subject for scholarly debate and a rich source for numerous literary and artistic endeavors, and in the last twenty-five years, it has come to be recognized as a masterpiece." - Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature III, pp. 1092-95. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 1-41; (1981) 1-138; (1987) 1-74; (1995) 1-74: and (2004) II-857. Bailey, Pilgrims Through Space and Time, pp. 43-4. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 2-76. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1313. Bleiler (ed), Science Fiction Writers, pp. 15-7. Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1480-87. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-78. Bleiler (1978), p. 159. Reginald 11610. BAL 16128. Wright (I) 2052. Heartman and Canny, pp. 38-40. Skillfully rebacked with two-thirds of the original spine panel preserved, spine label a bit chipped affecting two words, some scattered foxing and soiling to the text block, a very good copy. Overall, a very nice copy of a book now uncommon in publisher's cloth. Enclosed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box. (#154548).

Most, if not all, of the specimens issued in my articles have since been reprinted by different editors and publishers, but the present is the first occasion on which all the pieces referred to have been garnered into one sheaf. Besides the poems thus alluded to, this volume will be found to contain many additional pieces and extra stanzas, nowhere else published or included in Poe's works." - Preface. [ see BAL 16233 ].

The Press printed more affordable classic volumes that were previously published by Macy's Limited Editions Club and covered a broad range of topics primarily within the Western canon. In addition to Macy, directors of the Heritage Press included Cedric Crowell, General Manager of the Doubleday Bookshops; Frank L. Magel, head of Putnam Bookstores in New York; and A. Koch, head of Brentano Stores in New York. Though many of Macy's other imprints, including The Heritage Club, The Heritage Illustrated Bookshelf, and The Junior Heritage Club, were sold by subscription only, Heritage Press editions were sold through bookstores. Macy combined his publishing enterprises in 1944, though each imprint maintained its specific target audience. The archives of the George Macy Companies, including both the Limited Editions Club and The Heritage Press, were purchased by the Ransom Center in 1970. . . . .

Quarto, hardcover, fine in gold and white spine and marbled gold and black marbled boards in near fine black slipcase. Giftable. Reprint of the Ltd Editions Club edition. Introduction by Joseph Wood Krutch. Bibliographical notes, preliminary notice, the narerative and note. 267 pp. The title character, a stowaway, and another sailor are the only ones to survive a mutiny, storms and cannibals aboard a whaler. They are picked up by a British sealer heading into Antarctic waters, where they encounter a lost race of blacks living on an island where the color white does not exist; the water is multi-colored and viscous and even the natives' teeth are black. The crew is treacherously murdered and Pym and his companion escape in a canoe. Sailing further south, they encounter "a shrouded human figure, very far larger in its proportions than any dweller among men, " and the canoe falls into cataracts, where the story ends abruptly.
