The original photographs were taken in 1932 and 1933 and were published in 1940 under the title Photographs of Mexico. Port." written in felt pen at lower portion of slip case spineIn 1940, Lee Strasberg, (director of the Group Theater in New York), became very interested in Strand's photographs of Mexico taken in 1932 and 33. Strasberg encourage Strand to produce a portfolio selected from this body of work which would be available at an affordable price. Strand came to the conclusion that the only method of acheiving the quality of his platinum images was to make hand pulled gravure prints. The printing and production of the second edition was supervised by Paul Strand and Aperture, Inc. MURILLO: a principal figure during the first 4 decades of the 20th century in the fine arts in Mexico, for his involvement after the Mexican Revolution with social causes, including editorship of "La Vanguardia", as fine arts professor and director of the Academia de San Carlos where he taught and influenced Orozco, Siqueiros, Galván, and Rivera, for his association with the beginning of mural painting, and for his leading advocacy of the craft techniques of the indigenous peoples of Mexico, as expressed in the Mexicanidad movement and authorship of "Les Artes Populares en Mexico". PRESENTATION: in black ink, 6 lines + salutations + full signature with elegant flourishes, dated August 5, 1935, site-Mexico. FORMAT: Beige linen cloth board portfolio decorated with 2 hand pulled stencil (pochoir) print vignettes; upper side with a striking, 108 x 135 mm, 4-colors (black, orange, gray and beige) volcano pictorial-title in orange and black letters is part of the composition, lower side with a 87 x 70 mm, 2-colors (charcoal and beige) Nahuan sky pattern, fastened at the fore-edge by two beige and desert rose woven linen ties, edges notched with tie-sliders for marking place, inside lined at spine with original binder's brown cloth tape, inside panels mounted with handmade beige Mexican paper decorated with a repeating lizard scale pattern, subtly different for each panel.
