Leather. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. First edition. An exceptionally lovely first edition set of all nine volumes of Laurence Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy', including five first editions, and three volumes signed by Sterne himself. Laurence Sterne has signed volumes V, VII and IX, as called for ,to fight against piracy of this incredibly popular work.Sterne's work is a humorous and philosophical investigation into the connection between literature and life. A fictional autobiography, this work is also an experiment in the form and structure of printed narratives. Sterne played an important part in the rise of the novel, alongside contemporaries Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson.Consisting of:The 1763 fifth edition of volumes I and II. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece to volume I. Page 74 of volume II [E5] is a blacked out 'mourning page', with catchwords between leaves E4 and E6 running correctly.ESTC Citation No. T153496. These two volumes run [4], A-L8, M2; A-L8, M4.The 1761 second edition of volume III. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and with hand-coloured colour marbled leaf inserted between L4 and L5, as called for, which is a 'motley emblem' of Tristram's workESTC Citation No. T147052. Running A-M8, N4. Monkman III-1d.The concealed 1761 second edition of volume IV, distinguished by the correct spelling of "fancy" on p.73; in the first edition the word is mis-spelt "facy". ESTC no. N19729. The pagination skips ten pages due to Tristram stating he has 'torn out' a chapter, however the signatures are continuous; [4], B-O8, P2.The 1762 first edition of volumes V and VI, with Sterne's signature to the first page of chapter I of volume V. ESTC No. T14706. Running [5], B-K8, L3; [4], B-K8, L6.The 1765 first editions of volumes VII and VIII, with Sterne's signature to the first page of chapter I of volume VII. ESTC No. T14820. With signatures running [5] B-K8.With half titles to volumes IV, V, VI and IX.With the armorial bookplate of John Balguy to each front pastedown. With a contemporary inscription to the recto of a front blank of volume I, reading 'Charlotte Balguy, the gift of her father'.An exceptional set of Sterne's most influential work, viewed as key to the development of the English novel. Rebacked, in full calf bindings with gilt detailing to back strips, and with original boards restored. Externally, lovely, though volume number label to volume IX is lacking. Armorial bookplates to each front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned due to paper type, but otherwise exceptionally clean and bright. Very Good. signed by author. book.

The imprints being York 1760 (the first two volumes, without publisher but printed by Anne Ward), and London 1761-7, published by R. J. Dodsley (Vols. III & IV) and T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt (Vols. V to IX). 'The whimsical masterpiece of an iveterate jester.'- Baker & Packman. Vol. I, pp. [ii],179; Vol. II, pp. 182; Vol. III, pp. [ii],5-202; Vol. IV, pp. [iv],220; Vol. V, pp. [vi],150; Vol. VI, pp. [iv],155; Vol. VII, pp. [ii],160; Vol. VIII, pp. [ii],156; Vol. IX, pp. [vi], 145. The first two volumes, though without imprints, were issued in York in December 1759 and then London 1st January 1760. Volume III containg the inserted marbled page, Volume IV with the Hogarth frontispiece in first state, Volumes V, VII & IX all signed by Laurence Sterne as is usual. Half-titles in Vol. IV, V, VI & IX, as called for, the other volumes issued without. Vol, VII with errata on title verso indicating first issue, pp.147-155 ommited in the numbering in Vol. IV, as is usual & correct, the volume being complete. The first two volumes (issued together) bound together in contemporary calf with label, gilt. Volumes III & IV also bound (and issued) together uniform with the first two volumes. Volumes V & VI bound (& issued) together in similiar binding, but not quite uniform with the first pair of bound volumes, and with the contemporary engraved armorial bookplate of Sir James Pringle Dalrymple. The final three volumes bound in lighter calf, gilt, uniform with each other & each bearing the contemporary signature of M. Eaton. An excellent set, all in contemporary condition, probably 'made up' as is very often the case though sets frequently appear in variant bindings as is seen with works issued over a period of time. Some occasional light chips & scuffs to the bindings, slighty more so to Volumes V/VI, three small 2cm. cracks to top & bottom of the joints of the first three volumes, but the whole tight, clean & fresh throughout. Vg. [Cross 600-3; Rothschild 1970; Monkman 11-39; Baker & Packman 447; Ashley Lib. V, 204-6; Tinker 1973; CBEL II, 950].

Full Calf. Condición: Very Good. Signed by author as "L. Sterne" in ink in two places --- first pages of Vol. 5 and 7. This was done in an effort to combat piracy of the work. Notwithstanding the mixed state and two different publishers, all the volumes match perfectly, meaning they have the same dimensions, and thus form a cohesive set. And all the volumes are very early -- the stated 4th edition of the first two volumes appeared the year following the first edition. As not unusual, what are treated as different editions would today more commonly be treated as different printings of the same edition. Four or five of the volumes are first editions, we would note. We can't be 100 percent certain volume 9 is, as it is lacking Sterne's signature, which he is known to have done in the first of this volume as he did in 5 and 7, but obviously, he could have neglected to do so with some copies. 12mo. 16 by 10 cm. [7], 179, 182, 202, 1-146, 156-220, 150, 155, [1], 160, 156, [6], 145 pp. Frontis plates appear in Vols. 1 and 3. Half titles appear in Vols. 4, 5, 6 and 9. Vol. 2 and 8 have neither a frontis nor a half-title. Early editions can have half-titles in Vol. 2, but that doesn't mean that this particular edition calls for one. Volume 3 contains marbled paper pasted down to pages 169 and 170. Vol. 4 has no page 147-155, as these were deliberately omitted to support Sterne's humorous assertion that he had torn out a chapter, and so this copy is exactly as it should be with respect to this. Vol. 7 contains Errata on verso of title page. All volumes with an armorial bookplate depicting four cranes pasted onto the FEP. Condition: spines darkened, vertically striated from use. Chipping and/or roughness of most spine heads. Spine bases with little chipping but they have staining, or are darker than the rest of spine. Hinges/joints tending to have some light cracking at top and bottom. Several joints cracked. Several boards with short abrasions -- loss of the leather surface. Gilt numbers on spine dulled or gilt partly or fully vanished in a few volumes, but all numbers remain readable. Edges with rubbing or shelfwear, as one might expect typically, and not an inordinate amount, in our view. Endpapers with bands of browning around edges. Foxing of first few and last few leaves in most of the volumes. Prelim. blank leaves of Vol. 4 dampstained. Overall, though, the leaves are clean, and text blocks remain tight. Notwithstanding the flaws we have set forth, we find the set still attractive, the flaws ones to be in keeping with a contemporary calf binding of this vintage, and we might even say appropriate for such a set, and we ourselves don't think any restoration work is needed -- we would choose to live with the set "as is". Mixed state. Vols. 1 and 2: 4th Edition. Vols. 3, and we presume also 4: 2nd Edition. Vol. 5 to 8: 1st Editions; Vol. 9 probably a first edition.

First and mixed editions of all nine volumes of one of the greatest comic novels in the English language, signed by Laurence Sterne in volumes V, VII, and IX as called for. Small octavo, nine volumes bound into five in full contemporary calf with elaborate gilt tooling and morocco spine labels lettered in gilt to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, engraved frontispieces after Hogarth to volumes I and III, half-titles in volumes V, VII and IX (as called for). Signed by the author at the head of the opening chapters of volumes V, VII, and IX. Mixed editions, volumes I and II from the second edition and volumes III-IV from the first edition. Sterne autographed the beginning of the first and second editions of volume V, and the first editions of volumes VII and IX. This laborious means of protecting his book from piracy meant that he had to sign his name an estimated 12,750 times. Provenance: John Gibbons (1777-1851), South Staffordshire ironmaster and patron of the arts: inscription to front free endpapers; old edition notes, initialled "C.H.", to facing endpapers; Muriel Mary Temple Meade (nee Stephenson), Countess of Clanwilliam (1876-1952): ownership inscription to front free endpaper of volume 1, dated 1911. In very good condition. A nice set. Tristram Shandy is considered by many the first modern novel and Sterne the father of stream of consciousness writing. It is perhaps the most literal example of a novel available. Sterne was an Anglican Vicar who was influenced by Pope, Locke, Swift and Cervantes. His narrative devices and styles have indelibly influenced many modern and postmodern authors: James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Milan Kundera, Salmon Rushdie among others. "[Sterne] remains, as the author of Tristram Shandy, a delineator of the comedy of human life before whom only three or four humorous writers, in any tongue or of any age, can justly claim precedence⠦ he deserves many of the honors that have been paid to Pope and Swift" (DNB). Tristram Shandy's huge popular success made Sterne the toast of the London literary world. When some volumes were pirated, Sterne began signing some genuine editions of his work. This set is signed by Sterne at the head of the opening chapter.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. William Hogarth Ilustrador. 9 Vols, 16mo, uniformly bound in original tree leather. Publication dates range from 1760-1767. Signed by Sterne at beginning of Chapter 1 in Volumes 5 and 9. Vol 1-2 Second Edition [stated], R&J Dodsley 1760; Vol 3-6 First Editions, (3-4 R&J Dodsley 1761; 5-6 R&J Dodsley 1762). Vol 7 second state (T. Becket & P.A. Dehondt 1765, not signed by Sterne; no errata on title page verso). Vol 8-9 First Editions (T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt 1765 and 1767). Bindings solid, spines straight. Shelfwear to spine ends and corners, gutters cracked but boards still secure. Small area of leather missing at spine end of Volume 5. Leather rubbed on lower front board, near bottom spine end, of Volume 9. Two small areas of leather missing where spine and board join at lower extremity of Volume 9. Gilt faded from spines, but title and volume numbers still legible. Marbled endpapers, clean, unmarked text blocks in all volumes. Black leaf at E5 in Volume 1. Marbled leaf between L4 and L5 in Volume 3. Half-titles in Volumes 4-6 and 9, as expected. Sterne's novel ("a cock and bull story") has been called the greatest comic novel of the 18th century, and its influence is almost too far-reaching to fully measure. He was beloved by Thomas Jefferson, and the narrative techniques on show in Tristram Shandy prefigure everything from the stream-of-consciousness narration so evident in Joyce, to the kind of postmodern playfulness later evident in writers like Donald Barthelme. A handsome, early mixed set of Sterne's novel, complete in its original leather binding. Additional photos available on request. Signed by Author. 16mo.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. 4 volumes of 9 (volumes 2, 5, 7 and 8) Volumes 5 & 7 signed by Laurence Sterne. Volume 2. London. R. and J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall. 1760. Full leather. Edges worn and rounded. Leather on the hinges is cracked, but cords are tight, boards firmly attached. Raised cords and with a large gold 2 on the spine. 182 pages. Two early ownership names on the front endpaper. Rear free endpaper is missing. The binding is a surprisingly close match to the bindings on my volumes 7 & 8, though it s a quarter inch shorter. Volume 5. London. T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt [sic] in the Strand. 1762. Full leather. Leather worn and spine faded. Black title label on the spine. Hinges weak, but attached. Half title + title + dedication + 150 pages. The back of the title page has a large signature on it, EL Dixie Clement. 1864. There is a small signature on the title page, too. More importantly, the Laurence Sterne has signed at the top of the first page of Chapter 1. Volumes 7 and 8. Matching bindings, different from volume 5. London. T. Becket and P.A. Dehont, in the Strand. 1765. Full leather with pronounced raised cords. Volume numbers in gold on the spine, but no titles. The name H. Jones stamped in red on the front endpaper. Volume 7 has 160 pages. It is signed by Sterne on the first page of the first chapter. Errata printed on the back of the title page, which was corrected in the text in later printings. Volume 8 has 156 pages. Sterne s masterpiece was issued in 9 volumes between 1760 and 1767. The first two volumes were printed in a print run estimated to be only 200 copies of each. Its success led to larger editions of subsequent volumes. It also led to the appearance of unauthorized copies. To combat this, Sterne took the unusual step of signing the odd-numbered copies of the later volumes (starting with volume 5). This partial-set contains 2 of those precious signed volumes. Scarce first printings of what many consider the first modern novel. Complete sets are extremely scarce, since it was never issued as a complete set in Sterne s lifetime & it was printed 2 volumes at a time over the better part of a decade. Please email with questions or to request photos. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Hardcovers. 9 books bound into three volumes, each with its own title page. Early leather. Spines are considerably dried and chipping. The shapes of the raised cords and decorative florets are still there, but it's crisp and dry. Covers are a nice speckled calf, but darkened at the edges. First volume has Volumes 1, 2, and 3 in it. Front cover of the first volume is hanging on by only a single thin cord. Two names signed on the front endpaper: "R Wilson, November 17X9" That name is struck through with a line, and the name John Sykes is signed below. First blank page signed by R. Wilson. Title page of volume 1 dated 1760. Title page is printed crooked. 128 pages. Volume 2 title page dated 1760. Title page crooked again, and trimmed slightly smaller than the rest of the pages. Pagination continues up to page 264. Third volume title page dated 1761. Slightly smaller than the other pages. Pagination continuous up to page 416, followed by 2 blank pages. The second volume has both boards present, but both detached. Contains volumes 4, 5, 6. Title pages are dated 1761, 1762 and 1762. Pagination is continuous 1-409. Text block is cracked at the title page to volume 5, separating the book into two chunks. R. Wilson's name signed on front endpaper and first blank. The third volume has both boards pretty firmly attached. Wilson's name signed on endpaper and first blank. Title pages dated 1765, 1765 and 1767. Pagination continuous 1-320 pages. In all three volumes (9 volumes -- I realize that it's confusing to refer to the actual books as volumes at the same time that I am referring to the 9 volumes that the work was written as, but bear with me), the pages are clean and the text blocks are tight. The dates on the title pages here correspond to the true publication dates - but the publication history of Tristram Shandy is fraught - Its popularity resulted in the appearance of enough pirated editions that Stern too the unusual step of autographing the odd volumes of all the authentic and official editions (which were published by Becket and Dehondt). This set does not have those signatures and is not printed by The Dodsleys or Becket and Dehondt, but by D. Lynch - a publisher whose total sum of works still surviving on ABE is one slim volume of Charles Churchill's works, printed in 1769 - So it's possible (likely?) that the Lynch title pages were a decoy to hide the source of these pirated editions. The books are all the same size and in uniform binding, also hinting at the likelihood that they were published and bound at the same time, not two at a time over an 8 year period. My best guess is that this complete set was printed by a rogue publisher shortly after the final book was published in 1767 - although I have seen a convincing essay by John Yoklavich that Lynch purchased the unsold sheets of the second edition from the official publisher, replaced the title pages with his own (borne out by their obvious different papers and sizes) and continued to sell them, even perhaps printing more copies when he'd sold out the ones he bought from the original printer. First volume has a 2 page dedication to Mr. Pitt. The continuous pagination suggests that this is more likely to be one of the Lynch originals than the Lynch repackaging of the actual second edition sheets, since those are paginated separately (if Yoklavich is to be believed). Scarce and wonderful. Please email with questions or to request photos.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 6 volume set, 6 1/4 inches tall. An exceptionally well preserved early edition in bright 18th century speckled calf with gilt raised bands, contrasting twin labels and delicate gilt floral tooling to the panels. Small loss to a couple of headcaps otherwise bright and clean inside and out. With the rather splendid armorial bookplate of Francis Pigott Esq. Ninth Edition. First printed in 1759-67, through time, it has come to be seen as one of the greatest comic novels in English. Arthur Schopenhauer called Tristram Shandy one of "the four immortal romances". A fine early complete set.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. John Lawrence Ilustrador. Edited by Graham Petrie with an introduction by Gilbert Phelps. Wood-engravings by John Lawrence. 8vo. Newly bound by Bayntun-Riviere in half brown morocco with hand-marbled paper sides, the spine lettered in gilt, hand-marbled endleaves, top edge gilt.

  • Sketch-book, oblong octavo, containing thirty-one pages, one of which is blank. Five pages have been excised, one following the seventh drawing and the four following the final page, which is the blank page. Thirty highly accomplished original pen-and-ink drawings - one drawing has probably been excised, as the last drawing is simply an endpiece. The drawings are all on the rectos. The artist has written the above title on the upper cover, surrounding it with drawings of various heads and decorations - he has also written a shorter title together with one small drawing on the front pastedown. Each of the twenty-nine illustrative drawings is accompanied with a very short extract from the text that it illustrates. C.E. Vulliamy was to become a prolific author on a wide range of subjects.Faint signs of damp to lower portion of covers. The band which once held the book closed is missing. Very good.
