Small Octavo. 2nd illustrated edition. This title lacks two leaves of the preliminaries, and the title page (here, the half-title and title page had been nicely restored in manuscript). It also lacks the frontispiece and Frontius' treatise, De Aquaeductibus [24 leaves]. The present copy has 192 leaves, and [18] leaves which includes the colophon dated 1522 and printer's device, the text contains all the 140 engravings, some leaves misnumbered, woodcuts from the Vitruvius' 1513 pocket version. The quire K is incorrectly signed I as in several copies. Deep insight into aesthetic matters is well expressed by Prof. William A. Armstrong in one of his recent reviews stressing his knowledge of the manufacture and use of colors as well as of architecture, machinery, signs of the zodiac, arithmetic, drawing, music, optics, and history. (Renaissance Quarterly, XXIII, No. 3, p. 335). Copies of the 1522 version are moderately scarce and even defective copies seldom come up at auction. Bound in a later 19th century brown cloth binding backed in calf, lettered and decorated in gilt, toning to the outer margins of about 40 leaves at front, first few leaves have fragile outer edges. Bookplate of bibliophile Sol Eisen of Canada who pioneered the first Canadian Jewish Conference in 1919.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. This being the second illustrated edition of this classic book regarding Roman Architecture. Written circa ~27BC by Vitruvius, the work also known as "De Architectura" or "The 10 books of Architecture" and is the only surviving text from ancient Greco-Roman era regarding architecture. Vitruvius was a Roman architect which at the time meant a kind of "jack of all trades". The book describes divergent subjects pulling together Roman and Greek knowledge of; design, utility, measurement, construction, tools, defense and aqueduct production. Often interestingly referring to the natural world for support of the stated rules/conclusions. In book 3 he gives us what he is most known for, the correlation between the symmetry of the human body and structural design; this was to be the basis for the Da Vinci drawing of what was known as the Vitruvian Man, in both a circle and a square. Also in book 3/4, the three tenets of good architecture; durability, convenience/function and beauty are put forth. Illustrated throughout with wood cuts reduced from a previous edition. The work was "lost" for centuries before being copied and distributed to centers of learning during the Carolingian Renaissance, again "lost" before being discovered again at the start of the Renaissance. The first printed edition was in 1486, some 27 years previous to this copy, it was not illustrated. (Wikipedia) This copy from the Michael Tomkinson library at Franche Hall sold as lot #2002 via the Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge auction, July 7, 1922. This being the first 8vo. printing, bound in worn straight grained morocco with gilt panels and spine c.18th century; corners rubbed, joints worn and cracking though holding for now. Appearing complete and containing; ff 5, 188, 23, 24 with leaf 5 out of order. Some prior transfer to top of wood cut border on title page, balance of text very clean having no annotations, no foxing, very light occasional browning. Printers device on last page.
