Librería: John Windle Antiquarian Bookseller, ABAA, San Francisco, CA, Estados Unidos de America
New York: Ross & Tousey, 1860. 8vo, 24pp. Original pink printed wrappers. Very good. § Smith, a politician from New York, served as a U.S. Representative from 1853-1854. He was a noted philanthropist and social reformer active in anti-slavery campaigns and women's rights. One of Smith's less common sermons, conducted at the approach of the critical Presidential election of 1860, concluding "Church of Peterboro! Be true to your own God at the approaching Election. He is not your God, who would have men vote for candidates who are in favor of a white man's Party, and of excluding the black man from suffrage and citizenship. He is not your God, who would have men vote for candidates in favor of seizing the poor innocents, as they fly from the pit of slavery, and of casting them back into it.".

Hardcover. 203p., steel-engraved frontis portrait, minor foxing, one or two pages with lightly pencilled emphases, brown cloth decoratively pressed in blind and titled gilt, binding edgeworn with fading and discoloration of rear and spine panels, minor fraying along head, tail and joints. Smith, a leading radical abolitionist and supporter of John Brown, here takes a skeptical position on religion. (See Brown & Stein's Freethought in the United States, p. 41).

Paperback. 8vo. Wrappers. 85pp. Very good. Light soiling and minor edgewear. First edition. Collection of three lectures delivered in Peterboro on 21 February 1858, 23 January 1859 and 19 June 1859, followed by Smith's letter to William Goodell of 13 August 1859 defending his beliefs from Goodell's criticisms. Chief among this noted abolitionist's beliefs, of course, is his attack against those who claim a Biblical sanction for slavery and a defense of the Biblical call for abolitionism. "Unchanged from Their Original Publication," the front wrapper states -- but neither this title nor the three essays which it compiles are in Dumond or Sabin. Uncommon.

Stitched paper wrappers. First edition. 85 pp. 8vo. Contains three sermons originally from 1858-59 entitled: "Discourse on Creeds," "The Religion of Reason," and "What is the true religion," plus a "Letter to Mr. Goodell" in which Smith defends his opinions. ".what, as a whole, is a man's religion worth, which is not able to hold him back from voting for men who believe that there can be valid, obligatory, sacred, real law for making slaves; and from voting for men who believe in the right of making drunkards? For many, many years have I been calling on the Unitarians and Universalists, as well as on the orthodox, to throw away these religions, which murder instead of saving humanity, and which are a stench instead of an incense in the nostrils of heaven. For many, many years have I been calling on them to accept, in exchange for their abominable religions, the simple religion of reason and justice and Jesus. What the world is perishing for, is a religion of common sense and common honesty." Not in Sabin. LCP. Afro-Americana, 2nd ed. Suppl. 2127. Light soiling on rear wrapper else a fine copy.
