Ink stamp on top page ridge, burb adhered to and ink stamps on front endpaper. 1932 Hard Cover. 318 pp. In an Ireland controlled by hypocritical Puritanism, Francis Ferriter is determined to wage war on the sin he sees around him. But when feelings for a beautiful young prostitute awaken within him, he is wept into a storm of personal conflict. Only a sacrifice of blood will calm his turmoil and purify society. First edition, 8vo, bookseller's small label on front pastedown, publisher's rust-brown cloth tooled and lettered in green, dust-jacket designed by Theyre Lee-Elliott, slightly darkened at spine with small closed tears and fraying to spine ends, but overall a very good example. A typically visually striking jacket by Lee-Elliott, hinting darkly at the novel's play on a conflict between a perceived Christian fanaticism and the the growing "plague" of Communism. There are some newspaper clippings relating to the author loosely inserted.
