Im ersten Fall kann ein angehender Schriftsteller von der Vorgehensweise eines erfahrenen Kollegen lernen und daraus vielleicht seine eigene Arbeitsmethode entwickeln. Das heißt nicht, dass er sich bis ins Detail an einem etablierten Schriftsteller orientieren muss, aber er kann sich inspirieren lassen. Im zweiten Fall ist der Leser wohl eher ein Liebhaber des Werkes eines Schriftstellers und will erfahren, wie dessen Arbeiten entstanden sind. Ein Autor, der einen solchen Ratgeber verfasst muss sich aber auch im klaren darüber sein, dass er sich in die Karten schauen lässt . Die von ihm gegebenen Ratschläge bilden eine Art Raster, dass auf alle seine vorliegenden und sämtliche zukünftigen Werke gelegt werden kann. Ein solches Buch kann das Maß sein, an dem ein Schriftsteller von diesem Zeitpunkt an gemessen wird. Patricia Highsmith verfasste 1965 Plotting and Writing Suspense Fiction, in dem sie in elf Kapiteln ihre Arbeitsweise erklärt. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte sie bereits zehn Romane unter ihrem eigenen Namen und ein Buch unter dem Pseudonym Claire Morgan ( Carol oder The Price of Salt, 1952 /1990) veröffentlicht, die sich in den USA leidlich in Europa aber sehr gut verkauft hatten, darunter Zwei Fremde im Zug (1950), Der Stümper (1954), Der talentierte Mr. Ripley (1955) und Der Süße Wahn (1960). Ihr Verlag hielt sie also für fähig ein solches Buch zu schreiben und nach einigem Zögern nahm sie den Auftrag gegen den Rat ihrer Agentin an.1 Den Anstoß dazu gab ein Artikel zum Thema Suspense , den Highsmith für den Verlag The Writer, Inc. schrieb, der eine Reihe von Ratgebern für junge Autoren herausgab. 2 Der Erfolg des Buches zeigt sich daran, dass die Schriftstellerin es selbst 1983 und 1990 überarbeitet hat und das hier verwendete Exemplar bereits die zehnte Auflage ist. 24 pp. Deutsch.
