The unclipped dust wrapper is in near fine condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. "The London & North Eastern Railway" is an uncomplicated book. It tells us, in straightforward terms, the 25 year history of one of the 'big four' railway companies which were forcibly formed in 1923. The book first tells of the formation of the company - the amalgamation of several railway companies with very different sizes, operations and cultures. As the new company struggled to come together, it was struck by the General Strike of 1926 and then the Great Depression. The company recovered well in the 1930's, however, until the outbreak of war in 1939. After the war, it had only a breathing space before being nationalised in 1948. The book, written by an ex-employee, captures the pride and sense of achievement of the people who worked for the company. Despite encroaching competition from road transport, the railways were still the lifeblood of the nation. Ref ZZ6.
