RED TASSLE ATTACHED TO MARK SPOT, BOOK FILLED WITH COLORFUL ARTWORK, POEMS AND HISTORY. EPILOGUE ABOUT BOOK, CATALOGUE OF DRAWINGS, TIMETABLE. A WONDERFUL, TOUCHING BOOK THAT GIVES A LOOK INTO A VERY SAD PART OF HISTORY. A TOTAL OF AROUND 15,000 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 15 PASSED THROUGH TEREZIN. OF THESE, AROUND 100 CAME BACK. I Never Saw Another Butterfly The works were compiled after World War II by Czech art historian Hana Volavková, the only curator of the Jewish Museum in Prague to survive the Holocaust. Theresienstadt Ghetto was established by the SS during World War II in the fortress town of Terezín, located in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (a German-occupied region of Czechoslovakia). Theresienstadt served two main purposes: it was simultaneously a waystation to the extermination camps, and a "retirement settlement" for elderly and prominent Jews to mislead their communities about the Final Solution. Its conditions were deliberately engineered to hasten the death of its prisoners, and the ghetto also served a propaganda role. Unlike other ghettos, the exploitation of forced labor was not economically significant. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE INTERESTING BOOKS LIVE.

Second Edition. Quarto (27.5cm); woven pictorial cloth boards, stamped in gilt, no dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; 80pp. Boards yawning, spine internally detached from textblock (preliminaries still intact); minor wear and soiling. Gift inscription on ffep (dated 1973); red ribbon marker intact. Overall Very Good. This book is a collection of drawings and poetry as done by the youngest inhabitants of Terezín, a Czechoslovakian fortress that was later repurposed by Nazi Germany to house thousands of Jewish prisonersâ "a cynical "model ghetto" they could show to foreign parties, knowing that it was merely one more stop towards a final destination. Indeed, out of the 15,000 children to pass through Terezín, only 100 survived. This book endeavors to place a personal name and history to each work, and also contains a timeline and catalogs of art and poems.
