Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Venice Edition. Folio (310 x 210mm). [2],175pp., [1], 301pp. [2], 12pp., 175pp., [1]. Contemporary dark brown goatskin, (title and preliminaries lacking and supplied in early manuscript with illustrated printer s device, some browning and staining least severe after page 9). 17th-century inscriptions on rear endpaper for Index Capitum, a medical student s description of the various parts. Pictorial wood-engraved ex-libris by Leo Wyatt for Lord Norwich on front endpaper. Sold as is. First Venice Edition of Capivaccio s philosophical practica in Galenic teachings, a pillar for medical students of the Renaissance. First edition printed in Frankfurt in 1594 under the title "Practica Medicina." Capivaccio s lectures were posthumously edited by Johann Hartmann Beyer. This is the first Venice edition of these lectures on the healing sciences by one of the leading Italian medical practitioners of his time is edited by Giovanni Bernardo Sessa. Capivaccio died at Padua in 1589, where he had taught at the university for 27 years. He was a specialist in venereal diseases for which he had developed certain successful cures, guarding his secrets jealously from colleagues. Capivaccio applied a philosophical approach to his practica, so much so that it is doubtful if it was ever much used as a vade mecum. By writing at such great lengths, it is clear Capivaccio wished to educate students rather than give them a handbook. Apart from the wish to restore Galenic teachings and to educate students, one motive for Capivaccio s practica may have been to bolster the claims of university doctors over the central providers of medical expertise in the Renaissance, namely, priests, wise-women, magicians, herbalists and travelling empirics. This work important to the reform of the practice of medicine and to the wider concept of dogmatism or rationalism in medicine, the Renaissance physician could use Capivaccio s work to locate the causes of diseases as well as its signs. Hardcover. Condición: Good. 4to (205 x 150 mm), 2 parts in a volume in recent vellum binding, with golden title at spine, brown stains of oil at the upper margin and edge of the 2nd part (light repairs at top of last 4 leaves without text loss), still a good copy. Each part with own title-page and printer device, pp. (16), 190, (2 orig. blanks); pp. (40), 366, (2). Eighth edition (the first in 1562) of this kind of pharmacopoeia of the pharmacist Girolamo Calestani from Parma, that met with some success and remained in use throughout the seventeenth century, especially for its easy and clear text (frequently the main defect of pharmacopoeias). In the preface the author quotes the main masters to whom his art owes: Mesue, Albucasis, Saladino and Nicolò Salernitano (the antidotarium of these last 2 authors are usually included in the editions of Mesue s works), followed by a long catalog of doctors, alchemists, pharmacists and historians of the subject. The book is divided into two parts: the first part contains the observations about the simples , the second about electives, syrups, decoctions, oils, pills, and more. Among the preparations described there is the so-called oil of the philosophers of Mesue, a particular oily substance that was prepared in two ways and which seems to fall within alchemical experimentation. Durling 802 for the 1584 edition.

A FIRST COLLECTION of Lange's medical correspondence was published at Basel in 1554 by Johannes Oporin, who also printed a second volume in 1560. Some of Lange's letters were reprinted in Conrad Gesner's De chirurgia scriptores (Zürich, 1555) and in Epistolae medicinales (Lyon, 1556 and 1557). The present edition, in three books, is the most complete printed in the sixteenth century. The first book contains the same eighty-three letters as in the 1554-edition, the second the same sixty-one letters of the second volume of 1560. The third newly added part consists of six long letters and a copious index of names and subjects. The present edition was edited by Nikolas von Reusner (1545-1602), lawyer, historian, and Lange's compatriot. He studied first at Wittenberg under Melanchthon, later at Leipzig and obtained his doctorate in law at Basel. He achieved some fame after writing a series of laudatory verses for the members of the Diet of Augsburg. He taught law at the universities of Strasbourg and Jena and he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Krakow at the court of King Sigismund III. Emperor Rudolph II created him Count Palatine and poet laureate in 1594. Apart numerous juridical treatises Reusner wrote the text for the biographical dictionary illustrated by Tobias Stimmer Icones sive imagines virorum literis illustrium (1587) (cf. H. Wiegand, Nikolas von Reusner, in: ?Literaturlexikon?, W. Killy, ed., Gütersloh & München, 1988-1991, IX, pp. 400-401). Reusner dedicated the volume to a relative of Lange, the former personal physician to Emperor Charles V and King Philip of Spain, Georg Wirth, who was appointed his heir by Lange. This dedication letter, dated from Jena, February 1, 1589, contains also a short biography of Lange and a poem on Lange's woodcut portrait by Johannes Posthius from 1588. The volume embraces a wide-ranging series of topics including surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology, alchemy, astrology, pharmacology, botany and the improvement of medical education in German universities. Lange is remembered to have introduced the practice of trephination in Germany and is credited with the first definite description of chlorosis (Garrison-Morton, 3109). In letter LXIII of the first book is found a long discussion (pp. 336-350) on America. Most of the following letters, presumably mainly written to fellow physicians, have neither addressees nor dates. Besides some of them are addressed to pseudonymous recipients as Philadelphus, Demophilus, Critolobus, Pand.

Venezia, 1554; bound, pp. 216, cm 11,5x17.
