Descripción: Lausanne: Albert Skira, 1932. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Limited Edition. Illustrated with 29 original etchings by Matisse, of which 23 are full-page. Original publisher's printed wrappers, chemise and slipcase. From the edition limited to 145 copies, of which ours is one of the 95 copies of Velin d'Arches, signed in ink on page justification. Matisse used his extraordinary ability to master lines pure and essential to realizing the 29 drawings from which the etchings derive. Using the economy of the thin, engraved lines with no shading in order to not overpower the ethereal quality of Mallarme poetry Ref: Duthuit books#5, Artist and the Book#196, Rauch#168. Descripción: New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935., 1935. Quarto. Cloth, decorated in gilt and blind. Illustrated with six original etchings, accompanied by reproductions of the preliminary sketches. Trace of slight darkening along endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine, bright copy, without foxing to the etchings, in somewhat darkened slipcase with bruises at tips and cracks at joints of top panel. Modern half morocco and cloth folding clamshell case. First American printing of the corrected Odyssey Press text. From an edition of 1500 numbered copies, signed by Matisse, this is one of only 250 copies signed as well by Joyce. A textually significant edition, whatever the shortcomings of its design (by George Macy) and the inappropriateness of the illustrations (Matisse illustrated Homer rather than Joyce, a factor allegedly contributing to Joyce's reluctance to sign the entire edition). "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy, who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations, he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for five thousand dollars. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium) record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit, if less spontaneous, compositions" - Artist & The Book. Descripción: New York: Limited Editions Club, 1935. Sm. folio, xvi, 363, (1)pp., with 6 soft-ground etchings by Henri Matisse, each with reproductions of drawings towards the final plate on colored papers. Original cloth gilt, slipcase, a very good copy without the slipcase Limited to 1500 copies of the book signed by Matisse, of which this is one of only 250 copies also signed by James Joyce. Various theories have been offered for Joyce only signing some copies; in fact, correspondence at the HRC in Austin TX shows that his failing health and sight precluded his signing more than 250 or so, rather than his purported dislike of MatisseÕs illustrations or the theory that Matisse illustrated Homer not Joyce, which upset Joyce. ÒMatisse had never visited Ireland and so Joyce asked his friend and fellow Dubliner, T.W. Pugh, to send him an illustrated magazine from 1904, the year in which Ulysses is set, so that he could correctly render the details of Dublin life. However, Matisse chose to base his etchings on Homer's Odyssey, depicting the Calypso, Aelous, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe and Ithaca episodes of the poem. When asked why he had not illustrated the events of Joyce's novel, he replied: 'Je ne l'ai pas lu' ('I have not read it'; Ellmann, 686).Ó (Cathach Books), One of the most famous, successful, and rarest books of the press, it was designed by George Macy himself and printed by the ClubÕs print shop."One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. SIGNED BY BOTH JOYCE AND MATISSE. First Illustrated Edition with six soft-ground etchings and twenty reproductions of preliminary drawings on yellow and blue paper (mild foxing to extreme edges of etchings, contemporary bookplate, and endpapers). When Joyce learned that Matisse had chosen Homer as the inspiration for the illustrations, the number of copies he agreed to sign was abruptly reduced to only 250 from the entire edition of 1500. Those copies signed by both Joyce and Matisse were sold for five dollars more than the Matisse-only copies ($15 rather than $10). Descripción: Limited Editions Club., New York., 1935., 1935. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Fine. 1st Edition. Illustrated with six soft ground etchings by Matisse, each print accompanied by tipped-in reproductions of Matisse's preparatory drawings on blue (8 drawings) or yellow (12 drawings) paper. Text printed in black in double columns with headline and page number in red. Original publisher's rust cloth, decorative gilt vignette to upper board, title gilt to spine, top edge sprinkled red. James Joyce's Ulysses illustrated by Henri Matisse. From the edition limited to 1,500 copies signed by Matisse in pencil to the justification, with this one of approximately 250 copies signed, in addition, by Joyce in black ink. Directly after Mallarme's Poésies was published with Matisse's etchings, the New York Limited Editions Club approached Matisse and asked him to illustrate a text. It was suggested that he should illustrate Manon Lescaut or another text if that one did not inspire him. In March 1934, a contract was signed to illustrate James Joyce's Ulysses with lithographs. After several false starts - and confusion as Matisse chose his subjects from Homer - Matisse abandoned lithography for etching and executed the soft ground etchings used in the published work. [The Artist and the Book 197] Slipcase invisibly mended. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. de la librería 9639

Descripción: Paris: Tériade Éditeur., 1950. Soft cover. Estado de conservación: Fine. Limited Edition. This is Matisse’s last book and the one over which he had the most control. The idea of illustrating the poems of Charles d’Orléans, a fifteenth century French exile in England, came from Matisse himself in 1943, and it was executed after the war with his long-time collaborator and publisher Tériade. In this work Matisse has made not only the illustrations but has also written out the text by hand and enclosed it in his own cartouches. The subject matter of the poems is courtly love and separation, and it’s not unlikely that the object of d’Orléans’ longing was France herself. D’Orléans was taken prisoner after the French defeat at Agincourt and he was held more or less as a prisoner of war for twenty-five years. His royal connections as the grandson of Charles V and the nephew of Charles VI are shown by Matisse with the many hand-drawn fleurs de lis that appear throughout the book. The poetry of Charles d’Orléans has attracted the attention of other artists and fine press publishers. Raoul Dufy illustrated an edition of Poésies de Charles d’Orléans for Mermod in Lausanne in 1958 and Jean Frélaut illustrated an edition entitled Ballades, Rondeaux et Complaintes by Lacourière of Paris in 1949. This edition by Tériade is limited to 1200 copies plus thirty copies hors commerce. The frontispiece lithograph is signed and numbered by Matisse in the stone, and the edition as a whole is signed by Matisse with pencil on the justification page. It contains approximately one hundred color lithographs including fifty-four original illustrations. Enclosed in the original slipcase which is also in fine condition. Signed by Illustrator(s).
