Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Good. Besides being one of the major English poets of the nineteenth century, Matthew Arnold was a social critic and essayist of considerable eminence. There was hardly any topic that he did not turn his mind upon. In "Literature and Dogma", Arnold investigated the Bible, with the intent of making a clearer path to understanding Christian dogma, a it was exhibited both in the New and Old Testaments. Rejecting supernatural elements in Christianity, Arnold looked more to its impact as divine poetry, reflecting mankind's efforts to comprehend ideas such as God, prophesy, and salvation, and how comprehending the writings in the Bible may contribute to the betterment of individuals and society. ********************************* SERIES : TITLE : Literature & Dogma, An Essay Towards a Better Apprehension of the Bible. / AUTHOR : Matthew Arnold (1822 - 1888) / IMPRINT : Macmillan and Co. / PLACE : New York. / DATE : 1895. / EDITION : Reprint. This is Volume 5 of the Prose Works of Matthew Arnold , but the only place where this is indicated is at the bottom of the final page of text. STATUS : OP - OUT OF PRINT / PROVENANCE : From the personal library of a college professor. (Dwight Lindley, Professor Emeritus, deceased, Hamilton College, and with his signature) PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade Hardcover; Contains a Preface, an Introduction, and footnotes; [xx] + 351 pages; 4 3/4" x 7"; smooth maroon cloth-covered boards with title, etc lettered in gilt on spine. ****************************** CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - A clean and serviceable but obviously used copy. BOARDS - Moderate edge wear, top fore-edge corner tip of the rear board is cracked - modest surface rub and a bit of surface bubbling to cloth - else clean and presentable. / SPINE - Compression and slight fraying to extremities, a split to the head - title just slightly dulled. / BINDING - The leaves open widely - the entire text block is not so tight as when issued, however no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole may be considered fairly solid - TEXT BLOCK EDGES - Toned and slightly spotted- some nicking along the fore-edge - an impact to the top edge has caused a bit of wrinkling to a few leaves - else clean. / INTERIOR - Scattered small smudging and light spotting - an old dealer's code is penciled on the rear end-papers - some near-negligible ink marks on front fly-leaf - the professor s name and address written in ink on front fly-leaf (a long defunct address) - I spotted what may be pencil erasures in the margins - but these are so vague as to be irrelevant. Basically clean and serviceable.

Arnold defined religion as "morality touched with emotion." Also in this book: "to pass from a Christianity relying on its miracles to a Christianity relying on its natural truth is a great change. It can only be brought about by those whose attachment to Christianity is such, that they cannot part with it, and yet cannot but deal with it sincerely.". 1874 edition. Hardcover.
