Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This book provides not only a detailed study of the reign of Edward III but also a reassessment of his domestic achievements. By considering the history of the reign not in chronological or institutional terms but through Edward's relations with each section of the active political elite, Ormrod reveals Edward III as the prototype of a successful medieval king, rebuilding and enhancing the authority of the throne through the longest period of domestic peace in the Middle Ages. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Black Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. 2011. xxv, 721pp. B&W plates, maps. Bibliography and index. Yale English Monarchs series. "Edward III (1312?1377) was the most successful European ruler of his age. Reigning for over fifty years, he achieved spectacular military triumphs and overcame grave threats to his authority, from parliamentary revolt to the Black Death. Revered by his subjects as a chivalric dynamo, he initiated the Hundred Years' War and gloriously led his men into battle against the Scots and the French. In this illuminating biography, W. Mark Ormrod takes a deeper look at Edward to reveal the man beneath the military muscle. What emerges is Edward's clear sense of his duty to rebuild the prestige of the Crown, and through military gains and shifting diplomacy, to secure a legacy for posterity. New details of the splendor of Edward's court, lavish national celebrations, and innovative use of imagery establish the king's instinctive understanding of the bond between ruler and people. With fresh emphasis on how Edward's rule was affected by his family relationships?including his roles as traumatized son, loving husband, and dutiful father?Ormrod gives a valuable new dimension to our understanding of this remarkable warrior king." UNCLIPPED dust jacket in very good condition. Minor stain to bottom edge of the book. No marking, underlining, or inscriptions. A very good copy. PLEASE NOTE - heavyish book so extra will be required for shipping to non-UK customers.

First edition, first printing. Original black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm. There is a previous owner's name and a date written in ink to the upper left corner of the front free endpaper, the same owners initials to the centre of the rear pastedown, a number of tiny ink ticks beside some entries in the bibliography, and one neat correction to the index. The contents are otherwise clean throughout. There are a couple of small scratches (c. 1 cm) to the spine panel. In the unclipped dustwrapper, showing a little rubbing to corners, a couple of scratches to the spine panel, and a few light surface marks. "Ormrod has mastered the complex interplay of circumstance, motive, and personality to provide an original and important account not only of a King but of a nation at a critical stage of its history. Edward III is a remarkable achievement and deserves a wide readership, both among professional historians and the general public." (Scott L. Waugh, in the TLS). "Part of the problem is that Edward III's respect for the conventional images of kingship has obscured his personality, making him seem like a cardboard cut out. Perhaps the greatest merit of Mark Ormrod's magnificent new biography, is that it penetrates behind this image [.] Ormrod is at his best in describing the personality of the King, and his impact on English political society." (Jonathan Sumpton, in the 'Literary Review') Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
