Descripción: Amsterdam, 1658. Vellum. Estado de conservación: Very Good. A magnificent and lavishly illustrated work with c650 woodcuts on Brazil´s flora, fauna and natural history. 1658. Amsterdam. Elzevir brothers. In folio (344 mm x 216 mm). 12 ff. + 327 + 5 pp. + 226 + 1 ff. Contemporary vellum, boards ruled in blind and with a supralibros -a crown over oval monogram gilt on front cover-, possibly from Diego de Mendonca, spine flat with paper title label on spine and lettered in ink, very attractive binding in absolutely original condition, slightly soiled and rubbed. A few marginal worm holes on first folios, foxing spots and browning to pages, else broad margined and generally fresh. First edition of this title, second revised and enlarged (first 1648, entitled Historia naturalis Brasiliae) edition. The work is divided in four parts, the first contains the Medecina Brasiliensi and the Historiae rerum naturalium Brasiliae; the second contains the ¿Tractatus topographicus et metereologicus Brasiliae¿, by Marcgraf; the third contains the ¿Hitoriae naturalis et medicae Indiae Orientalis¿, mainly by Bontius; the fourth contains the ¿Mantissa aromatic¿. It provides extensive information and details on the native uses of Brazilian flora and fauna in the 17th century, specially their healing powers, local diseases and poisonous animals, and also a few of Chili by Marcgraf. The latter focuses on the plants, trees, animals, insects and marine life of Brazil. Borba de Moraes describes the work as the most important scientific work on Brazil of its time. ¿A pioneer work on tropical medicine and the largest work from the standpoint of format published by the Elzeviers¿ (Garrison-Morton). Piso (1611 ¿ 1678) was a German physician and botanist, after studying medicine in Caen and practicing it in Amsterdam, he sailed for Brazil to replace the Count of Nassau´s physician ¿He seems not only to have been physician to th Governor of Dutch Brazil but also head of a scientific mission sent there by the West India Company¿; overall, he worked in the Dutch settlement in Brazil for about ten years (1633 ¿ 1644). The work is considerably enlarged an revised over that of 1648 ¿published whilst Piso still resided in Brazil- ¿Piso disliked the manner in which Laet had edited the work¿ (BdM) and accused it of having errors; in fact, the new title would give the impression of his intention to create a different work than that printed 10 years before; it is in fact, by many, considered a different work. Descripción: Amsterdam, Ludovicum et Danielem Elzavirios, 1658. En folio mayor. Soberbia portada barroca grabada, (11) h., 327-(5), 39, 226 pp., (1) h., numerosas ilustraciones dentro de texto. Encuadernación en pergamino rígido, doble hilo dorado en los planos, lomera con hilos y adornos dorados y tejuelo en marroquén; ejecutada y firmada por Benito Vera. PRIMERA EDICIÓN, segunda obra publicada por Piso. Piso fue el jefe de una expedición científica mandada a Brasil por la Compañía de Indias Occidentales. Durante su estancia realiza numerosos viajes y estudios al tiempo que se publica su libro "Historia Naturalis Brasiliae". Cuando regresa a Europa diez años después no le gusta la manera en la que Laet había editado su obra y decide entonces volver a escribirla y publicarla de nuevo con numerosas modificaciones y adiciones, si bien muchos de los grabados son los mismos. El autor escribe en el prólogo que su obra "Historia Naturalis Brasiliae", que apareció durante su estancia en Brasil, vino con muchos errores. En consecuencia decidió reorganizarla por entero y publicar una nueva obra con el título ‘Indiae Utriusque.’. Este libro contiene cuatro trabajos diferentes: el primero por Piso "Historiae naturalis et medicae Indiae Occidentalis"; el segundo por Marcgraf "Tractatus topographicus et metereologicus Brasiliae"; el tercero por Jacobi Bonti "Historiae naturalis et medicae Indiae Occidentalis"; el cuarto de nuevo por Piso "Mantissima aromatica".La mayoría de las ilustraciones están sacadas de su "Historia Natural Brasiliae" motivo por el cual algunos autores han pensado que se trataba de la segunda edición de la obra; basta con repasar el contenido de capítulos para darse cuenta de que son dos obras totalmente diferentes. Piso detalla minuciosamente la flora y la fauna de las Indias y Brasil, completa además su trabajo con las propiedades médicas de las plantas y su apropiada utilización. El magnífico frontis ilustra dos nativos, con plantas, árboles y diferentes animales incluyendo el leopardo, el rinoceronte, culebras, peces etc. En la última parte de la obra llamada "Mantissa Aromatica sive de Aromatum et Plantis", Piso da una interesante relación sobre el Chocolate.Referencias: Nissen 1533; Pritzel 7157; Hunt 280; Borba de Moraes (1958) II, 153-154; Sabin 63029 Large folio. "Owing the fact that a number of the woodcuts in this work are reproduced from his Historia Naturalis Brasiliae, this is sometimes said to be a second edition. It is in fact a different work, as a comparison of the contents will prove" (Sabin). This book contains four different works: the first contains the Medicina Brasiliensi by Piso, the second the Historiae rerum naturalium Brasiliae by Macgraf, the third book is entirely by Jacob Bontius, and contains the Historia Naturalis et Medicae Indiae Orientalis (Piso is the editor and he provided annotations and commentaries); the fourth part contains a treatise by Piso on the Mantissa aromatica.
