"One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31). At the conclusion of the 1970's this book was voted by the editors of The New York Times Book Review to be not only the best book published in the last ten years but the book most likely to still be read one hundred years from then. Some minor wear along the edge of the front joint, with minute paper loss to corners on both ends. A bit of the usual toning and creasing to the spine panel, diagonal crease on the lower left corner of the rear wrapper, with a small, faint dampstain at the base of the rear joint. Spine is cocked just a few degrees, with '29' written faintly at mid-spine, with a very faint circular stain at the center of the front panel (largely obscured by the cover art). Previous owner's name on the half-title page, and even with the stated flaws, still an exemplary copy of a fragile, cheaply made volume; the few we have seen outside of South America have looked positively dreadful. The publication history of 'Cien Años de Soledad' is particularly telling. The book had a first printing of 8,000 copies, which first appeared in Buenos Aires bookstores on June 6th, 1967; it took exactly two weeks for them to be sold out. Three more printings were done in 1967 (June, September, and December), each of them approximately 20,000 copies. The first printing is the only state of the book with the cover art featuring the ship and three yellow flowers, a design García Márquez reportedly hated; an alternate design created by a friend graced the cover of later printings. Published three years prior to the American edition, and quite rare in comparison. This can only be regarded as Garcia Marquez’ masterpiece, the book that would earn him the Nobel Prize for literature –along with others- and a position in the ranks of the major league for contemporary authors. As expected the book that ultimately popularized South American literature was an immediate bestseller, with three editions published the same year in June and December, this being the real first edition, published in May. The editorial company was in a rush to have the book published, so it neglected to utilize the image Marquez wanted for the cover, later editions actually have the image he wanted.
