First edition of the author's masterpiece which is recognized as one of the most significant works in the Spanish literary canon. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Presentation copy, inscribed and dated in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "Para Susi, con la amistad de Gabo 1967." In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Rare and desirable in this condition and signed in the year of publication. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Colombia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31). At the conclusion of the 1970's this book was voted by the editors of The New York Times Book Review to be not only the best book published in the last ten years but the book most likely to still be read one hundred years from then.

couverture souple. [ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Cien Años de Soledad [One Hundred Years of Solitude] Editorial Sudamericana | Buenos Aires 1967 | 13,5 x 20 cm | in original wrappers Second edition only one month after the first edition. Spine lightly wrinkled, small signs of folding in the margins of the boards, a light mark on the second board. Rare and precious autograph inscription signed by Gabriel García Márquez on his masterpiece to his friend and translator Claude Couffon: "Para Claude, con un gran abrazo de amigo, Gabriel 1968." ("For Claude, with a big hug from your friend, Gabriel 1968.") Claude Couffon, a French specialist and translator of the major Spanish-speaking writers of the second half of the 20th century, translated Chronicle of a Death Foretold a few years later. On the last page, below the colophon, Gabriel García Márquez specified an address in Barcelona, that of his famous literary agent for Spain: "c/o Agencia Carmen Ballcells Urgel 241, Barcelona, 11." Rightly considered as one of the most important works op the Spanish language, the novel by García Márquez, however, had difficult beginnings after a first refusal by the avant-garde Barcelona publisher Seix Barral: "This novel will not be successful [.], this novel is useless." García Márquez sent it from Mexico to the Argentinian publisher Francisco Porrúa who immediately perceived the power of this unknown Colombian writer: "It wasn't a question of getting to the end to find out if the novel could be published. The publication was already decided from the first line, in the first paragraph. I simply understood what any sensible publisher would have understood: that it was an exceptional work.".

Wrappers. Condición: Bueno. 2nd ed. 13x19.5. 351pp. 2l. Wrappers. The cover has been wrapped in a transparent plastic covering, which has caused the blue endpapers to stick to the covers. Staining (foxing?) to the top edge, which is not visible in the interior. At the end of the book there is a page (possibly from the Bogota magazine Flash) with a geneology of the Buendía family, and a dramatis personae; it has been carefully cut out with pinking shears, and neatly tipped in. Presentation copy with a dedication (on the page of the printed dedication), "Para Artajerjes, GABO, 1971", with a drawing of a flower. Artajerjes (a wild and wonderful name, shared witha Persian king) is the Venezuelan poet Artajerjes Muñoz. This cover is the one that Márquez had wanted, desiged by his friend, the Spanish-Mexican artist Vicente Rojo; however, it had not arrived in time for the first edition which came out on 30th May, and the publishers had to get an alternative design from the Argentinian artist Isis Pagano. Rojo's design, with the inverted E in the title was first used for this second edition, which came out exactly one month later. . Español.
