A scarce American edition of Stead's detailed review of Chicago and its problems with vice, mercantile and political corruption, poverty, and children's welfare, based on his observations during a residency of several months in 1893 and interviews with leading citizens and ministers as well as with ''unbelievers,'' including bankers and merchants, saloon keepers, and madames. Hardcover. Condición: Very good. First Edition. A vividly written, highly perceptive account of life and politics in Chicago based upon the author's visit to the city in 1893 - during a time of economic depression following the triumph of the World's Columbian Exposition. Stead (1849-1912), an erudite and well known British journalist and minister, interviewed notable public figures, as well as people who were poor, in jail, or involved in criminal activities or political graft. His account of Chicago and its people remains valuable, unsurpassed in its scope and ability to capture images of what it was to live in the city at that time. Octavo: xvi, 460, [4] p. with a frontispiece and the two color folding map of the Levee District identifying the locations of brothels, saloons, and pawnbrokers. Original burgundy cloth binding, with gilt titles. Some very light pencil marginalia, with tiny ink initials to the top corner of the front pastedown. Just the slightest hint of foxing, with a bit of mild wear to the corners and tips; otherwise very good.

If Christ Came To Chicago!: First Edition. 5.5 x 7.75in. 472pp. Publisher's half cloth over paper-covered boards. The second and third blank comprise a street map, in color, of the 1st Ward-13th Precinct of Chicago, carefully labeling each known brothel, lodging house, pawn broker, and saloon. Additionally a frontispiece of Christ. | If the Devil Came To Chicago: First Edition. 5.5 x 7.75in. 352pp. Extensively illustrated. Publisher's cloth boards. | William Stead visited Chicago in 1893 and, a year later, published his puritanical screed against the moral corruption and decadence he thought evidenced there. Later that same year the author Austyn Granville, with William Knot, wrote a rebuttal to Stead, "If the Devil Came To Chicago." While humorously skewering Stead's moral superiority, Granville and Knot simultaneously provide a far more nuanced depiction of the city, even daring to caricature the wealthy as Stead did the poor. Pertinently, the former owner Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz, who spent his life and career in Chicago, has here assembled these two regional classics in their own custom clamshell case. Judge Marovitz was an eminent Chicagoan with, surely, his own opinions on morality and vice, having served on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois from 1963-2001 and being elected the first ever Jewish senator to the Illinois Senate. His former owner stamp several times at the inside of the slipcase and at the end-papers and paste-downs of both volumes. An exceptional example of Chicagoiana. If Christ Came To Chicago! is in VERY GOOD condition showing some loss from the extremities, a chip of the paper overlay of the front board, over-opened slightly but holding strong, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain distinct. If the Devil Came To Chicago is in VERY GOOD condition showing a slight hint of furrowing at the back board, text-block evenly and lightly browned, slightly over-opened but holding strong, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text remains clean and unmarked, and the boards are bright and distinct. The slipcase has a small chip from one of the spine labels, otherwise is in excellent condition. As pictured.
