Soft cover. Condición: Good. Some tanning on page edges. Cover has some light tanning and bumping wear at edges, and small crease at top corner of back cover. This attempt to confront the myth of imperialism with the reality of its classic example - the Victorians' motives for partitioning Africa - is the first study of that spectacular movement as a whole for a quarter of a century. Distrusting mechanistic explanations in terms of economic growth or the European balance, the authors have looked for motives in the minds of the partitioners themselves. The result is a history of imperialism in the making, not as it should have occurred in twentieth-century social theory, but as the empire-makers were moved from day to day. This standpoint stresses as the original causes the beginnings of national feeling in Egypt and South Africa and the peculiar workings of the official mind, rather than expansive forces within European society.
