Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing An outstanding copy with a crisp fine/near fine book with a superb very good red variant dust jacket with the extremely scarce unfaded spine still retaining the majority of the red tones. Written while Orwell suffered severely from tuberculosis and published shortly before the disease claimed his life, the novel is a work ?of hectic, devilish, claustrophobic intensity. nightmarish in the telling? (Clute & Nicholls, 896). In 2005, the novel was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. Named as one of Modern Library 100 Best Novels of the twentieth century. ?It is quite simply a novel which has changed the world? The book is in Fine condition with crisp, bright and clean light green cloth boards with red titles to the spine. The boards have sharp corners and no edgewear. The cloth has a very small touch of fading along the outer edges of the cloth, and only a very slight amount to the spine cloth which is otherwise common with this title. The binding is tight and square. The end papers are in clean and in bright condition with no owner names, no bookplates and no inscriptions. The internal pages are clean, bright and flat and crisp with no age toning, no stains, no marks, no writing, no bent pages and no foxing. Beautiful clean, crisp, book internally appearing as unread. Scarce in this condition. Please see images. The preferred near fine scarce red variant original dust jacket retains the exceedingly impossible to find unfaded red spine with the majority of the red tones present. We have only encountered a few of these jackets with the spine colors still mostly red, as the red jacket is very prone to fading and is normally found with the spine faded to various shades of grey. The Nineteen Eighty-Four jacket is known to be extremely fragile. This jacket benefited from very very slight restoration which was limited to the outer spine tips, and a dime size spot of rubbing to the spine. The jacket has no chips, and no tears, and is NOT price clipped, having a stated price of 10s. net on the front inner flap. The front panel of the jacket has light rubbing and the rear panel has some overall toning. Please see detailed images. A remarkable crisp, clean copy of this title in the scarce red variant color. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our ABE store for other landmark SciFi titles.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with red titles to the spine, in the maroon Michael Kennard designed dustwrapper. Top edge purple. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh with a little fading to the extreme edges. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The text block edge is a little toned with a few spots of foxing to the top edge, the purple however remains vivid and without fading. Complete with very good rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, that has a couple of small chips with associated creasing to the upper tip of the habitually faded spine. The present example, in entirely original condition, does retain some of its red colour to the spine panel rendering the white titles still legible and is therefore uncommon thus. Not price-clipped (10s net to the lower front flap). Housed in a bespoke grey and black quarter morocco solander case. The first printing of Nineteen Eighty-Four was published on 8th June 1949, the 25,000 copies issued in two colours of dustwrapper, identical in all but the background colour of the upper panel and spine, one being green, the other maroon. Although no precedence has been established, the maroon would appear to be scarcer of the two and is considered the more desirable. (Fenwick A12a). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

First edition, first impression, in the preferred red dust jacket. Copies of the first impression were issued either in green or dark red dust jackets. To judge from surviving examples, this was done in proportions of about two green to one red, and consequently the red is scarcer. Orwell's ninth and last book, a warning against totalitarianism in any guise, had a monumental effect on the English language, introducing terms such as "double think", "newspeak", and "Big Brother" into the language. "No novel of the past century has had more influence than George Orwell's 1984. The title, the adjectival form of the author's last name, the vocabulary of the all-powerful party. It's almost impossible to talk about propaganda, surveillance, authoritarian politics, or pervasions of truth without dropping a reference to 1984" (Packer). Fenwick A12a. George Packer, "Doublethink Is Stronger Than Orwell Imagined", The Atlantic, July 2019. Octavo. Original light green cloth, spine lettered in red, top edge red. With red dust jacket. Spine and edges sunned, extremities slightly bumped, trace of label removal to front pastedown, contents clean; jacket a little rubbed and price-clipped, spine sunned, extremities lightly chipped and worn with minor loss to foot of spine, a couple of short splits to flap folds: a very good copy in very good jacket.

First edition, first impression, in the green jacket. Ownership inscription on half-title dated July 1949, the month after publication. Spine lightly faded, as often, contents clean; unclipped jacket rubbed, a few chips to edges, 5.5 cm diagonal closed tear at upper right corner of front panel, notably bright overall: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

FIRST EDITION. 192 x 125 mm. (7 1/2 x 5"). 312 pp. DRAMATIC BLACK MOROCCO WITH INLAID DESIGN, covers with central panel dominated by the all-seeing eye of Big Brother inlaid in vellum, green, and black on a background mosaic of geometrical compartments in shades of red, the eye radiating gilt rays, four more "eyes" peering at the central eye from each corner, raised bands, spine panels with gilt fleuron at center, two red morocco labels, marbled endpapers, rear pastedown with binder's leather label dated 2022 and with a tree-like design that may include the initials :"J I." â Pristine text in a new binding. Orwell's classic dystopian novel is offered here in a memorable binding that plays homage to one of the story's most infamous motifs. The modern design features two perpetually open eyes, which can be fully appreciated when the binding is completely open and the covers are seen side by side. Alert and unflinching, the eyes look directly at--or perhaps through--the viewer with uncomfortable scrutiny. The large pupils and irises resemble the lenses of cameras, and the blood-red inlays, coupled with black borders, evoke a sense of dread, helping to establish the terrifying tone of the narrative even before the first sentence. Set in a world of totalitarian governments whose citizens endure constant surveillance and where even one's thoughts can be punished, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" revolves around protagonist Winston Smith, an otherwise unremarkable worker at the so-called "Ministry of Truth," who secretly dreams of rebellion against the state and its lies. According to Britannica, "the novel gains much of its power from the comprehensive rigour with which it extends the premises of totalitarianism to their logical end: the love of power and domination over others has acquired its perfected expression in the perpetual surveillance and omnipresent dishonesty of an unassailable and irresistible police state under whose rule every human virtue is slowly being suborned and extinguished. Orwell's warning of the potential dangers of totalitarianism made a deep impression on his contemporaries and upon subsequent readers, and the book's title and many of its coined words and phrases ('Big Brother is watching you,' 'newspeak,' 'doublethink') became bywords for modern political abuses." George Orwell was the pen name of writer Eric Blair (1903-50). Straight out of school (where he studied with Aldous Huxley), Orwell joined the Indian Imperial Police, but became disillusioned with their mission and returned to England to pursue writing. The present novel was Orwell's final work, written while the author was sick with tuberculosis and published just six months before his death.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of George Orwell's (1903-1950) classic dystopian novel that has captured the imagination and fears of readers, critics, and social observers ever since its publication in 1949. Orwell's ninth and final book, written and published in the closing years of his life, Nineteen Eighty-Four provides a gripping and prophetic meditation on the twentieth century's totalitarian movements. Set in an imaginary future (1984) absorbed in conflict, the story traces the fate of Winston Smith, a diligent party worker in the superstate of Oceania, who secretly abhors and yearns to rebel against the ruling Party and its dictatorial leader, Big Brother. Equal parts science fiction and cautionary tale, Nineteen Eighty-Four accentuates the historical revisionism, propaganda practices, linguistic manipulation, and violence that characterized Stalinist Russia, Nazi Germany, and other ascendent totalitarian ideologies of the pre- and postwar world. Nineteen Eighty-Four would share important themes with Orwell's satirical and allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945), including an emphasis on social stratification, the subordination of the modern individual to the collective, the power and manipulability of language, and the consequences of ideological revolution. Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published in the UK by Secker & Warburg in 1949 to high critical acclaim, and in the US by Harcourt, Brace & Company the same year. It has remained a mainstay on popular and critical reading lists ever since, and its concepts and neologisms, including "Big Brother," "doublespeak," "thoughtcrime," and "memory hole," have managed to endure as important terms in our twenty-first century lexicon-as has the eponymous phrase "Orwellian." In 2005, Time Magazine selected the book as one of the 100 best English-language works published between 1923 and 2005, and the Modern Library named it one of the best works published in the twentieth century. One of the greatest works of modern fiction, here in first edition with a striking custom binding. Octavo. First edition rebound in modern red morocco with skull buttons and "Winston Smith" lettered in white to left breast with on-laid fake eye to chest with blind-stamped lines; title and name lettered in white on spine; front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns replaced with collage of Orwell's eyes, including a secret "trapdoor" on front pastedown disclosing a picture of the Queen of England; minor toning to certain leaves, including title page (as pictured). Brilliant first edition in remarkable custom binding. First edition, first printing with "First published 1949" on copyright page.

First edition, first printing. Published by Secker and Warburg, London, in 1949. This is a very good (or better) copy. Publisher's original pale green cloth with lettering to spine in red and the rich, red top-stain still intact. Some spotting to preliminaries and edges with a few other isolated and minor instances to a few other pages. Some creasing to page 190 and to top corner of page 76 & 77. Boards beautifully clean and red top-stain is unfaded and well-preserved. The original and unclipped dust jacket - designed by Michael Kennard, has some tears to edges with areas of rubbing and some minor loss to spine tips and chipping to corners with a few internal repairs. There are thin patches of rubbing to the spine. The green and red dust jackets were issued simultaneously with no priority between them. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy of an iconic title and without restoration. Nineteen Eighty-Four has become a classic literary example of political and dystopian fiction. It also popularised the term "Orwellian" as an adjective, with many terms used in the novel entering common usage, including "Big Brother", "doublethink", "Thought Police", "thoughtcrime", "Newspeak", and "2 + 2 = 5". Parallels have been drawn between the novel's subject matter and real life instances of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and violations of freedom of expression among other themes. Time magazine included the novel on its list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005, and it was placed on the Modern Library's 100 Best Novels list, reaching number 13 on the editors' list and number 6 on the readers' list. In 2003, it was listed at number eight on The Big Read survey by the BBC.

First editions, first printings of the complete 20 volume uniform set (Vols. I-IX were previously issued in 1986-7). Original blue cloth lettered in silver to spines, in the dustwrappers designed by Ekhorn/Gray, each volume with a bound-in ribbon bookmark. A fine set, presenting as unread, the bindings square and firm, the contents clean throughout. The unclipped dustwrappers are very near fine (barring the occasional nick and touch of rubbing), except for Vol. IX, which is a little rubbed to edges and extremities with a closed tear (c. 6 cm) to upper half of the rear spine fold. A wonderful example of this magnificent, and scarce, set. Peter Davison's monumental edition of Orwell's complete works is, even by the standard of editorial undertakings on this scale, a labour of love, and of sheer persistence in the face of serial obstacles that might have deterred anyone less tenacious. In a 2012 article, he recounted the vicissitudes that beset the project. The original plan to publish freshly edited versions of Orwell's nine books in time for publication in 1984 ("a new but intriguing kind of anniversary celebration") had, "owing to disastrous delays" only materialised in 1986 and then had to be pulped, the printer having used an uncorrected version of Davison's text. Despite many further headaches (including a sextuple heart bypass and Secker and Warburg changing hands seven times) and precarious financial circumstances, Davison, with the assistance of his wife Shelia, and Ian Angus, set about collecting, editing and annotating everything Orwell wrote, including letters, articles, reviews, lecture notes, as well as hundreds of BBC broadcasts. Angus, formerly Librarian and Keeper of the Orwell Archive at University College London, had earlier edited (with Sonia Orwell) the 1968 four-volume set of Orwell's 'Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters', an edition which became the starting point for Vols. X to XX of this later edition. A huge bibliographic undertaking, Davison soon discovered that all previous and current editions of Orwell were, to a greater or lesser extent, unreliable. The new edition attempts to restore the author's original intentions. "This is no simple reprint with a few typographical errors corrected", he writes in the general introduction. "It was realised from early on that the textual position was complex and as the history of the texts was recovered and the variations in readings realised, it became apparent that a new edition without explanation would prove confusing". Each volume is provided with textual notes and a list of readings and variants. In his review (The Observer, 23 August, 1998), Paul Foot wrote of the edition that "the volumes sing with Orwell's irresistible writing style. Prose, he said, should be like a window pane, so you can see right through it. Every letter, every broadcast, even every diary entry is written clearly, sprinkled everywhere with wit, surprise and hope". Tan full cloth boards, bold red cover and spine titles, light shelf wear, bump. Pages near fine, clean; no writing Bind fine; hinges intact. Original first edition dust wrapper, light shelf wear; unclipped 3.00, protected in new clear sleeve. Classic mid-twentieth century wrapper in bright blue with bold black titles. Caricature of Orwell at back panel by George Holland. Rare near fine first edition in same original wrapper. 1984 is the year in which it happened! The world is divided into three great powers, Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia, each perpetually at war. Britain is part of Oceania and is known as Airstrip 1. Throughout Oceania, The Party rules through four ministries, whose power is absolute. The Ministry of Peace deals with war, the Ministry of Love, seat of the dreaded Thought Police, handles 'law and order,' the Ministry of Plenty deals in scarcities, and the Ministry of Truth doles out the propaganda. 'New-speak' is the 'modern' perversion of language ordained by the Party. It has installed such remarkable words as double-think (duplicitousness), thought-crime, and sex-crime or 'love' in standard English. In every room, a tele-screen is installed, which can never be switched off, and where 'authorities' spy on every action, word, gesture, and thought. On every hoarding a huge face is displayed - the face of Big Brother! Set within this nightmare is the drama of Winston Smith, possibly the last man alive to rebel against the Party's rule and doctrine, clinging to the belief in the individual and in those precious human feelings and values. With flawless craftsmanship, ingenuity and narrative power Mr. Orwell lays out a terrifying potential future. The love of Winston for the amorous and independent Julia, and the fate that befalls them, stirs the reader's emotions as the cautionary tale paces to a tremendous climax. When Mr. Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was published three years prior, critics hailed him as a new Jonathan Swift. The satirical passages in '1984' justify the critics' verdict. But, presented here is much more than satire. Printed in the United States of America by the Haddon Craftsman, Scranton, Pa. 314 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. Book.
