Descripción: Oilprinting Storch & Kramer (for) B. May y Ca., Berlin: Oblong 4to, ca 1855. 27 colored lithograph plates of Cuba. Color illustrated lithographic title page, title printed in gold. With their original tissue guards (some ruffled). Two folding maps. Original elaborate red velvet binding titled and ornamented in gold, expertly rebacked. Possibly a presentation binding. One of two pirated editions printed in Germany in the 1850's, a marvelous album of views based on the work of Cuba's master lithographer Frederic Mialhe depicted in his Viaje Pintoresco al Rededor de la Isla de Cuba (Havana, 1847-1848); this edition with captions in Spanish only and without vignettes on the maps (the other pirated edition was printed in either Berlin or Hamburg, with tinted lithographs instead of the color lithographed plates, as here, the captions were in Spanish, English and German, and a series of vignettes were printed around the border of the two maps); the lithographs in this issue are much more detailed than in the other pirated edition. Perhaps the finest pictorial record of daily life in Cuba in the 19th century, with port and city views of Havana, countryside scenes, a bullfight and a cockfight. This copy with all plates fully and beautifully color lithographed. Sabin 17748 (for the other pirated edition which had only 26 plates). Though OCLC locates an equal number of the two editions, this colored issue seems to be less common in trade. For an account of Mialhe's original edition, which was printed in Cuba, and the two German piracies, see Emilio Cueto's Mialhe's Colonial Cuba (Miami, 1994), pp. 73- 77. Oblong 4to. 27 color lithographed plates and color lithographed illustrated title leaf [printed rectos only], with tissue guards, 2 folding maps. Nº de ref. de la librería 11352

Descripción: Berlin: B[ernado]. May y Ca., [1855, or later]., 1855. Oblong 4to., (9 4/8 x 13 4/8 inches). Chromolithographed pictorial title-page heightened with gold, 2 folding maps of Cuba and Havana), 27 numbered chromolithographed plates, all with tissue guards (some marginal spotting, small marginal tear in map of Cuba). Original deluxe binding of rose velvet elaborately decorated in gilt, the lower cover with the gilt supra libros of the "Condesa de San Antonio", all edges gilt (unevenly faded, extremities a bit rubbed). Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 233 A reissue in a deluxe binding of Bernardo May's pirated edition of views from Frederic Mialhe's lithographs for the series "Viage pintoresco al rededor de la Isla de Cuba" printed by Louis Marquier Havana, ca 1848 and sold by them in competition with Mialhe's originals at less than half the price. These magnificent and lively views include images of the entrance to the port of Havana, several fine perspectives of the city itself, local landmarks such as the Plaza de Armas, Puertas de Monserrate, Teatro de Tacon y Parte del Paseo de Jsabel II, Fuente de la Jndia en el Paseo de Jsabel II, Almeda de Paula, the church of Mayor y de Ermita del Buen Viaje, the city of Matanzas, the entrance to the port of Santiago, Trinidad, and local trades and pastimes including a bull fight. In 1853 both Mialhe and Marquier had unsuccessfully sued May for breach of copyright and demanded "the sequestration of the May-plagiarized albums, notification to the press to stop advertisements of said views, and 20,000 pesos as damages". May denied plagiarism on the grounds that ". after all, ladies in carriages, street sellers, churches, monuments, and landscapes were all there in full view to any artist who cared to paint them". The maps of Cuba and Havana were also copied from an 1847 map by Jose M. de la Torre. Following the failed lawsuit May reissued this volume in 1855. Sabin 17748; Palau 5421; 167989 (note); Cueto, Mialhe's Colonial Cuba, pp.1-7, 73-77. Nº de ref. de la librería 72lib798

Descripción: Berlin: Oilprinting Storch & Kramer [for] B. May, [circa 1855]., 1855. First published in Havana in 1847-48 as Viaje Pintoresco al Rededor de la Isla de Cuba, Frederic Mialhe's work was pirated twice in the next decade by the Berlin publisher Bernardo May, who succeeded in defending himself against a breach of copyright suit by Mialhe and his Havana publisher Louis Marquier. Ironically May's pirated edition guaranteed the availability of Mialhe's well into the future for the original Havana edition is virtually unobtainable today. This copy has the captions in Spanish only, and in quality of the lithographs and their coloring is superior to the other pirated issue. ¦ With Cuban provenance: on the front free endpaper is the pencil inscription to "Miss Julia Mellon, Havana March 17th, 1861, from W. Tinquet [?]." Oblong folio, original blind-tamped grey-green cloth, gilt decorations and lettering on the upper board. Color-lithographed title and 27 plates after lithographs by Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe. Two folding maps. Sabin 17748; Palau 5421. Unobtrusive repairs to the corners and endpapers; cloth a little soiled; very good copy enclosed in a custom clamshell box. One of two pirated editions produced in Germany in the 1850s, both by Bernardo May. Nº de ref. de la librería 22674

Descripción: B. May y Ca., Havana, Cuba, 1855. Embossed green cloth covers, W. Estado de conservación: Generally Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No DJ. Pierre Toussaint Frédéric (Federico) Miahle Ilustrador. 9.75 x 14 Inches. c. 1855. Title translates in English as "Picturesque Album of the Island of Cuba." 27 chromolithographs, chromolithograph title page, and 2 folding maps, printed in Berlin by Storch & Kramer, Berlin (lithographer). 9.5 x 13.5 inches, each print overall; 5.75 x 8.75 inches, each print image; 11.5 x 15 inches, each map overall. Comprehensive 19th century colorplate travel book in green embossed bindings with rococo title, comprised of 27 handsome chromolithograph views (each within decorative blue border in the baroque taste), a decorative chromolithograph title page with gilt lettering, and two folding black-and-white maps - one of Cuba and the other of Havana. No text, as issued. The views include several of Havana and other port cities from the water, urban landmarks, and scenes of daily life and folk customs in rural villages. Many of the urban views also include people in period dress. Some of the rural scenes also include Afro-Cubans. In addition, there are two maps en suite, one of the Island of Cuba and one of Havana. (See the list of plates and maps below.) The plates are based on paintings made by a French artist who taught at the art academy at Havana, and were printed by Storch & Kramer, one of the leading printing firms specializing in color lithography in mid 19th century Europe. Condition: This book and its prints and maps have recently been completely professionally restored by a bookbinder and paper conservator. Covers very good with the usual overall light toning, soiling wear. Spine replaced. The prints and maps are now loose in the original binding. The binding has been enhanced by the bookbinder with the addition of a pocket formed of three internal flaps to hold the prints in place when the book is on a shelf. The prints are conveniently viewable in this format, and some or all can be removed for framing, as desired, or left entirely or partially in book form. Prints are very good with the usual overall light toning and wear -- each has been cleaned and deacidified. The toning of the paper varies for each print, from whiter to creamier. They have some scattered light browning, foxing, handling, soiling, smudges, etc., mostly confined to the margins and not obtrusive. Some short tears to the margins of various prints, all restored. Margins of title page reduced, but still ample, and now mounted on archival sheet the same size as the prints, thereby recreating the margins and restoring two marginal tears. Maps fold as issued, now backed on Japanese paper to strengthen and restore wear and minor openings and losses at folds and marginal chips. Tissue guards lacking. More images and information available on request. Nº de ref. de la librería 000144
