Original pen, ink, watercolour and wash heightened with gold and graphite. 270x310mm. Signed and dated ([19]13) in the lower left corner. A fine, beautifully characteristic piece in excellent condition with a couple of faint spots in the yellow sky. Mounted and framed. "Nielsen shows in his development a fancy so delicate and an outlook so original that no charge of plagiarism can be brought against him. His colour work is delicate and suggestive rather than forceful. Very lovely is its faint blues and greens with tones of peach is the illustration plate 21 [i.e. this painting] where the high folly, the love birds and the blossom testify to the legacy of Japan." - Keith Nicholson (Kay Nielsen, 1975) Nielsen produced 26 watercolours for In Powder & Crinoline to illustrate seven fairy tales chosen by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. This watercolour illustrates the story, "Felicia or The Pot of Pinks". LITERATURE: In Powder and Crinoline edited by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (Hodder & Stoughton, 1913), p.52.

Published within In Powder and Crinoline, sub-titled "Old Fairy Tales Retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch", in 1913. This fine watercolour was originally reproduced opposite page 124 and is one of the 26 colour plates. The illustration accompanies the tale of "The Man Who Never Laughed". Writing about "some of the new gift books" in the 1913 Christmas issue of The Bookman, A. St John Adcock stated "Kay Nielsen is a young artist of curiously original gifts. There are traces in his drawings for In Powder and Crinoline of the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, and there are also an imaginative daring, a fantasy, a fascinating grace and decorative loveliness that are peculiarly his own and make his art unique amongst the illustrations of this year's books". Exhibited: Leicester Galleries, London, November - December 1913, item 7. Original drawing (297 x 257 mm) on card, laid down on board, fine ink and watercolour, signed and dated ("Kay Nielsen 13") lower left, mounted, framed, and glazed (framed size 555 x 489 mm). Very minor fading but still a strong and vibrant, near-fine drawing.

Signed limited editionÂof one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration. One of 500 numbered copies, this is number 41. Quarto, original vellum, gilt titles and decoration to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. Signed by the illustrator Kay Nielsen. With 25 tipped in color plates. In near fine condition. A very nice example. Laid is the original notice for the Leicester Galleries exhibition held in November and December of 1914, where the watercolors for this book were offered for sale. â Kay Nielsen was a brilliant colorist and a highly decorative illustrator, able to introduce images that were sometimes strikingly fantasticâ ¦ [The style] was uniquely his own, and his depictions of fairyland less sombre than Rackhamâ sâ ¦ By general consent, Nielsenâ s most spectacular and celebrated book is East of the Sun and West of the Moon, old tales from the North, translated from the Norwegian of Peter C. Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe (devoted collectors of Scandinavian folk lore in the mid-19th century)â ¦ Nielsenâ s unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations. Drawing in pen and ink, enhanced by watercolour, with an immaculate technique, Nielsenâ s beautiful books were always embellished with his designs for endpapers, frieze-like patterns, initial letters, and other decorative motifsâ (Dalby, 90).

Signed by Nielsen at the foot of the drawing. An original pen and pencil drawing with wash on heavy cream coloured stock. The stock roughly 360 by 265mm, signed at the bottom, the image itself roughly 270 by 175mm, matted and protected in a plastic sleeve. Well preserved with little evidence of age and no damage to the drawing surface. A RARELY ENCOUNTERED DRAWING BY ONE OF THE FOREMOST ILLUSTRATORS OF THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY. The Nielsen drawing is quite an interesting piece. It seems possible that it might have been intended for use as a set design, but it is also a rather accomplished drawing which has very finished elements such as the figure at the far left and the figure facing. These incorporate Nielsen's best traits as an artist. The figure to the far right seems also to have a wash applied as the artist might have done while beginning his water colour work. A working figure underlies one of the finished ones, and the drawing is signed by Nielsen at the bottom of the plate.

The white cloth, the gilt work and decorative work to the covers, the text-block and plates are in remarkably pristine condition. This is the last book Kay Nielsen would illustrate for Hodder and Stoughton. It was a book begun many years prior and worked on throughout Nielsen's early career. Nielsen had started work on his paintings to illustrate Grimm's stories in 1912, but the work was halted due to the occurance of The Great War. After the 1918 Hodder and Stoughton resumed the publishing work on Nielsen s illustrated books. In 1924 it was finally decided to complete Nielsen's Grimm project. The book was offered only to the luxury market and was not issued in a trade edition in England.

Signed limited edition, number 434 of 600 copies signed by the illustrator. An advertisement issued by the publishers appeared in the Times Literary Supplement on 3 December 1925, which stated "there is only one edition of Hansel and Gretel, which is limited to 500 copies". Evidently demand increased the limitation but, with no trade edition, this is a scarce book. The publishers noted "the art of Kay Nielsen has never been shown to greater advantage than in these truly wonderful illustrations to Grimm's Fairy Stories. The draughtsmanship, the decorative skill, and the fairy imagination are unique, and place Mr Kay Nielsen as one of the greatest of illustrators and decorative artists. This magnificent volume is also a fine example of the engraver's and bookmaker's art". "Nielsen is a brilliant colourist and a highly decorative illustrator, his works formed into frieze-like patterns, are closest to Persian or Middle-Eastern designs and therefore akin to Leon Bakst or Edmund Dulac" (Houfe, p. 401). Times Literary Supplement, 3 December 1925, p. 823; Simon Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914, 1981. Quarto. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in terracotta morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, single rule to boards gilt, pictorial onlay of the gingerbread house to the front board, inner dentelles gilt, dark green endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With 12 tipped-in colour plates, captioned tissues, and 10 full page monochrome plates. Some minor light damp staining to the fore-edge of 15 pages else an excellent copy in a fine binding.

Condición: Fine in very good jacket. First edition, in the original dust jacket, of this gorgeous outlier of the Golden Age of Illustration, a fantasy of interplanetary travel by South African architect William Timlin. An Old Man fulfills the dream of his youth, "sailing by way of the Moon, and the more friendly planets" on his way to the Shining City of Mars. The ship of the title, designed by the aged engineer but built by fairies, captures the tale's balance of science fiction and fantasy: one iconic plate depicts the ship, whose design hearkens back to the Age of Discovery, outrunning the magnificent flare of a meteor. The only work authored by Timlin, THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS secured his reputation alongside prolific professional illustrators like Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and Kay Nielsen. A beautiful copy of a strikingly original space odyssey. Quarto. 12'' x 9''. Original quarter vellum, grey printed paper boards, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt. In original printed dust jacket. 96 leaves of heavy grey paper, containing 48 mounted pages of printed lettering in Timlin's hand and 48 mounted full color illustrations. Jacket lacks 2'' x 2'' piece on spine, some closed tears, one with attendant tape repair on verso. Book beautiful with only a hint of toning to extremities.

284 x 220 mm. (11 1/8 x 8 3/4"). 1 p.l., 206 pp., [1] leaf. Attractive dark blue morocco by Asprey (stamp-signed in gilt on pastedown), replicating the original cloth binding in color and decoration, upper cover and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles, cream silk moiré endpapers, all edges gilt. With 25 tipped-in color plates with descriptive tissue guards, numerous black and white text illustrations. â Back cover with the vaguest hint of soiling and use, otherwise a virtually faultless copy. Offered here in a beautiful morocco binding imitating the design of the original cloth, this is the greatest work of celebrated Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen (1886-1957); it may also be the most beautiful children's book ever published. The work includes 15 Norwegian folk tales accompanied by Nielsen's darkly evocative illustrations that conjure wintry landscapes, moody heroes, and otherworldly visions. As the "Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales" notes, Nielsen's designs marry strong linearity to delicate coloring, with "highly stylized" people and objects. "Foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of [Nielsen's] illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story's emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions." The high-end New Bond Street emporium Asprey has been a London fixture since 1781, serving as jewellers to a long line of British monarchs, and they sell a range of luxury goods, including finely bound books (for a short time, they even owned the merged firms of Zaehnsdorf and Sangorski & Sutcliffe). First Edition with Nielsen's illustrations, trade issue.

Signed limited edition, number 19 of 600 copies signed by the artist, together with the bookplate of Jan Pie kowski and David Walser. A publisher's advert stated "there is only one edition of Hansel and Gretel, which is limited to 500 copies" (TLS, 3 December 1925). "Nielsen is a brilliant colourist and a highly decorative illustrator, his works formed into frieze-like patterns, are closest to Persian or Middle-Eastern designs and therefore akin to Leon Bakst or Edmund Dulac" (Houfe, p. 401). The Polish-born Jan Pie kowski (1936-2022) was an award-winning illustrator and writer of books for children, and a designer of moveable books. He is chiefly remembered for his illustrations to the "Meg and Mog" series. The first book, Meg and Mog, was originally published in 1972. After the death in 2012 of the original author, Helen Nicoll, the series was continued by Pie kowski together with David Walser. Times Literary Supplement, 3 December 1925; Simon Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914, 1981. Quarto.
