Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen. Illustrated by Harry Clarke.
Descripción: London: George G. Harrap & Company, 2 & 3 Portsmouth St., Kingsway, W.C., n.d. [1916], 1916. Soft Cover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Harry [Henry Patrick] Clarke Ilustrador. First UK Trade Edition. Scarce. First UK Trade Edition of Clarke's first book, in the deluxe Velvet Yapp binding, with the original, but damaged, box (with artwork on the lid not found in the book). Imperial Octavo - about 11.25 x 7.75" (29 x 19.5cm). Bound in the publisher's deluxe limp purple Velvet Yapp (suede) binding with gilt lettering, a black decorative vignette at center, and an outer border of black squares to the upper cover, and with gilt lettering and a black decorative vignette to the spine. TEG - Top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Plain grey endpapers. pp. [1-8], 9-319, [320] plus plates, not included in the pagination. In the publisher's original, but damaged, box with a large buff pictorial pastedown to the lid with a black and buff illustration (not found in the book) and black lettering, and with black lettering to the upper edge of lid. Printed at The Complete Press, West Norwood, England on wove paper watermarked "St Winifred." Illustrated by Clarke with 16 tissue-guarded, tipped-in color plates, including the frontispiece, mounted on white cards, 24 black and white plates, 26 vignettes (12 are repeats), and with vignettes to the upper board and spine and to the lid of the box. About Very Good Condition - the book has been well protected by the box, some light soiling to the cover, a one inch stain to lower cover (appears as just a bit of darkening), just a bit of gilt loss to the cover, more loss of gilt to lettering on spine (has a crackled look), creasing and an inward bowing to the spine, yapped cover edges are creased and curled (but not torn), two lines of fading to suede on lower cover right along the edges of the card on which the suede was mounted, covers are a bit bowed (as the velvet is mounted on card instead of boards), previous owner name (Eileen Thomas) and another word in pencil to front free endpaper, two creases to front free endpaper, some bubbling to rear pastedown endpaper, endpapers edges worn, foxing to pictorial half-title page, a few pages with some pale marginal spotting and perhaps some very pale foxing to some mounts, page corners bumped and occasional chipped/rounded, protruding page edges worn (denting and some chipping), an occasional corner crease, cracking between some gathering but holding fine, a few small marginal closed tears, lower edge of tissue guards worn, about half of the tissues creased and a few with some rippling, tissues perhaps a bit tanned, one black and white plate almost detached, most color plates a bit cockled as usual (the color plates were glued along both the upper and lower edges and it seems that either the mounts shrank or the plates became a bit slack over time - the plates tend to rise up from the mounts at the center or have some waviness), one color plate also with some buckling (wrinkling) toward upper edge (the color plates are not torn nor creased), an occasional light smudge but really quite clean. The box is worn and in need of repair/restoration - the pastedown to the top of the lid has some soiling and has crackling along left and lower edges (but the illustration is still quite nice), the lid is worn along edges, and the lower corners of the top of the lid are torn with a piece torn off, the left side and lower side of the lid are missing, the right side of the lid is torn partway along the edge to the top and down the side, the upper side of the lid (with printing) is torn halfway along the edge to the top and damaged at upper left corner with the paper lifting from the board, the box itself (the lower part) is quite soiled, missing the lower side, the right side is bowed inward with two lengthwise creases, has been taped to the lower board, and is detached from the upper side, the upper side has a corner crease, the left side is bowed inward, the edges to the lower board are very worn, torn, and dented. A lovely copy of this uncommon book (despite the minor flaws) in the original, but damaged, box. Reference: Steenson A1.c., Bowe 2. Additional photos ava. Nº de ref. de la librería CT0011
