An extraordinary art forgery document, a signed drawing, sold as by Rufino Tamayo, the renowned 20th century Mexican painter & printmaker that was later identified by Rufino Tamayo as a forgery. He documented the event for Jacob D. Weintraub, the owner & prominent NY art dealer by dramatically writing FAKE through the head and autographing his declaration below. The on-the-spot response transformed a mediocre forgery into a conceptual artwork on identity fraud and the corruption of an art market that ceaselessly searches for in demand product. The banner style declaration (in capitals) spans 65 x 182 mm (2.6 x 7.2 inches) and is done in the manner of voiding a financial instrument, with an artist's confidence in combining line

Tamayo Rufino. Book by Juan Garcia Ponce. ******* and space, piercing a wrist and cutting into an eye, the central k executed as an insult-v along the nose, joined to an x. The nonpareil Rufino Tamayo autograph nearly spans the width of the drawing; its long T-bar highlights FAKE. Three pieces of preserved documentation on the rear backing, the art gallery seller label, a museum sticker used to augment provenance, and Weintraub's jottings on the purchase, establish some of the historical background. Additional forensic documentation for the forgery declaration is provided by a matching period, late 60s' signature by Tamayo on the deluxe justification leaf in a rare limited edition book on his paintings owned by Jacob Weintraub. *******

Descripción: Mexico City Editorial Seneca 1940, 1940. First Illustrated Edition, the First Edition solely in Spanish, following the bilingual Spanish-English edition translated by Rolfe Humphries and published just a few weeks earlier in New York. With four full page plates from drawings by Garcia Lorca, two in colour and two in black and white. Titlepage printed in black and red. 4to, publisher’s original printed wrappers and with the jacket band announcing "Un libro inedito de Federico Garcia Lorca." Now preserved in a folding case. 187pp. A fine, uncut copy, very well preserved indeed. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION AND FIRST SOLELY IN SPANISH OF Garcia Lorca’s final published cycle of poems. The poems were published posthumously in 1940, but were written during his residency in New York in 1929 and 1930. His experiences in New York, amongst the disenfranchised African American population, transformed him into a passionate advocate of the theatre of social action. This edition followed the bilingual New York publication by only a few weeks. It is the first to include his art work. Lorca rose to international acclaim as one of the members of the Generation of ‘27, an influential group of poets that arose in Spanish literary circles. He was presumed killed by anti-Communist forces just days after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Nº de ref. de la librería 24298

Descripción: Editions Cercle d'Art, Paris, lithography by Chenot, texts in Spanish and French, except for one Catalan text, 1964. Soft cover. Estado de conservación: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. BACKGROUND: At the epicenter of the labor movement were the coal miners of Asturias, a region in northern Spain. They staged a series of work stoppages, protests and strikes [1860-1934] that culminated in the Spanish Civil War. The first large nationwide strike in Spain since 1934 had its beginnings on April 7, 1962 with staged walkouts by coal miners in Asturias. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to put down the spreading strikes, the Franquist government acceded to their demands on May 24, 1962. Galvanized by the miners' actions, a manifesto supporting freedom was published, signed by many of Spain's leading intellectuals and in 1963, leading expatriate artists & writers decided to express their support and collaborated on this book, "Asturias". The title symbolized their determination to bear witness and many of the texts & illustrations refer to the region's history. These themes are extended by Juan Alcalde in the original art done for this contributor example. CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: clean; light wear at foot of gutter in second half of book. / Wrappers: clean; one small crown tear, two foot tears. / Glassine: scattered light foxing, spine with some soiling, foot with a few edge chips, fore-edge with hanging tear. / Binding: solid and reliable, front hinge weakened, spine slight slanted. PROVENANCE: provided by the superb original frontispiece in pen & ink and watercolor, signed Alcalde with a second multi-figure work on the facing title page, Asturias printed in capitals in watercolor & wash along the spine. A self-portrait of Alcalde in blue watercolor and charcoal illustrates the introduction. HAND WRITTEN POEM BY ANTONIO GAVINA: signed by Gavina with a floral decoration, 49 lines, in an incantatory style, first line, "Negro de Espana", twining in and around the printed text of his contributory poem and onto the facing page and illustrated with two original drawings by Alcalde in opposite margins with Antonio Gavina printed in the center, a portrait head of Gavina, and a built up landscape in colors; text, handwritten poem, portrait, and landscape becoming together a manifestation of the mind of the poet. TEN OTHER HIGHPOINTS COMPLEMENTING CONTRIBUTIONS: for Rafael Alberti, an exceptional two pages of drawings; José Herrera Petere, a portrait bust complementing the facing portrait head by Semper; for Wenceslao Roces, a landscape featuring a guitar player, finely built up around the Burgos print; for Nicolas Sanchez-Albornoz, a work showing a sign painter painting Asturias, circumscribed by architectural elements, done in counterpoint to the facing Ceballos work of a miner with a pickax; for Gomendio'tar Joxe Miguel, a fine portrait of the writer; for Maria Teresa Leon, a headpiece complementing Alcalde's own contributory facing print; for José Gomendio, two powerful, consecutive, full-page mixed media works in built-up color showing; and for Francisco Ferrer's poems, two works, particularly a political caricature facing the Beti print of a clawing hand. JUAN ALCALDE: with the advent of the Spanish Civil War went into exile. In 1939 he immigrated from Paris to Venezuela, returning again to Paris in 1960. He has exhibited extensively in France and Venezuela. SIZE: 330 x 282 mm (12.99 x 11.1 inches). PAGINATION: Confirmed complete, pages not numbered but 97 pages with 44 b/w lithographed reproductions of the original b/w lithographs made for the book. Artistic contributions include the superb division sheet by Pablo Picasso executed Nov. 23, 1963. FORMAT: Publisher's cream jacket over board sides in the original sewn binding with protective glassine wrapper, the upper jacket side with the artist's names in violet and the writer's names in lemon. "Then I realized I had been murdered. / They looked for me in cafes, cemeteries and churches . but they did not find me. / They never found me? / No. They never found me." - Lorca, Federico Garcia. THE POET IN NEW YORK. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. 1940. 8vo., 240pp. True First Edition, preceding all others, issued just a few weeks in advance of the Mexican Edition. Bi-lingual text, with translation into English by Rolfe Humphries, brief Introduction & closing Biographical Note by Hershel Brickell. Dull pumpkin orange cloth boards, gilt-stamped at spine, brown topstain, fore & bottom edges untrimmed. A fine example in a very good or better example of the uncommon light tan original correctly priced dustwrapper with the New York skyline cameo on front panel. The dustwrapper with some neat reversible Japanese paper & methyl cellulose archival repair primarily to some small loss at the spine crown, corners & top edge. An important book & one of the great rarities in the field of Modern Literature. A very nice copy. Custom TBCL embossed orange cloth slipcase. Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca [1898-1936] Spanish dramatist, theatre director; the greatest Spanish poet of his age, a Surrealist in technique. In June 1929, García Lorca travelled to America with Fernando de los Rios on the SS Olympic, a sister liner to the Titanic. They stayed mostly in New York City, where Rios started a lecture tour & García Lorca enrolled at Columbia University School of General Studies, funded by his parents. He studied English but, was more absorbed by writing than study. He also spent time in Vermont & later in Havana, Cuba. This collection Poeta en Nueva York (A poet in New York, published posthumously in 1940) explores alienation & isolation through some graphically experimental poetic techniques & was influenced by the Wall Street crash which he personally witnessed. This condemnation of urban capitalist society & materialistic modernity was a sharp departure from his earlier work & label as a folklorist. Lorca was rounded up and shot during the Spanish Civil War, but it remains unclear precisely why. His homosexual life-style may have contributed to the charges against him. Whatever the true cause, his death was a great loss to Spanish literature and art. Nº de ref. de la librería 32122

Descripción: Paris La Nouvelle Edition 1945, 1945. Second edition thus, one year after the first. WITH A SIGNED PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY THE EDITOR, JEAN CAMP. Printed in blue. Small 4to, publisher’s original printed wrappers, in glassine. 95 pp. A very good copy with only a bit of minor expected wear to the delicate paper wrappers and toning to the paper as is typical. INSCRIBED BY JEAN CAMP. Perhaps Garcia Lorca’s most famous work, "Gypsy Ballads" was first published in Spanish in 1928. It consists of eighteen ballads, each of the poems have something in common, dealing with Gypsy culture . It reflects the pains of a persecuted people living on the fringe of society and finding itself pursued by the representatives of authority, and their struggle against this repressive authority. This struggle would be echoed in Garcia Lorca’s own life, he was presumed killed by anti-Communist forces just days after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. A unique copy, inscribed by the editor, Jean Camp. Camp also provides essay on Garcia Lorca and his work which is not included in the earlier Spanish or English editions.
