Leipzig, Georg Weidmann, 1736-45. Gross-Folio.

Tomus I. (.VI.) Leipzig, 1736-43. 4to. (Reprint Vico Verlag, Frankfurt am Main 2014) (I:) CCXXX, 504 S., 22 Bll.; (II:) 700 S., 15 Bll.; (III:) 564 S., 8 Bll.; (IV:) 658 S., 8 Bll.; (V:) 748 S., 4 Bll.; (VI:) 968 S., 4 Bll. 6 Halbleinenbände. Daniel RITTER in Leipzig (1736-1745) in sechs Bänden. Codex Theodosianus, an official compilation of all "leges generales" enacted since Constantine, whether obsolete or in force, made at Constantinople by a commission appointed by Theodosianus II in 429, and completed by a second commission of 435 which had power to alter but not omit constitutions. The work was published in 438 and a copy was sent to and approved by the Roman Senate. It was provided that no reference might thereafter be made to any constitution, with a few exceptions, save as enacted in the Codex. It was divided into 16 books, these into titles, and, within titles, chronologically. The titles were generally arranged as in the jurists`Digesta. It has not survived completely but in parts in later works. In the East it was superseded by Justinian`s legislation, but continued to be used in the West. It was edited by Gothofredus, and by Mommsen and Meyer.
