Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This copy is in fine, unmarked condition bound in mauve cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The unclipped dust wrapper has some very mild edge wear so best described as near fine condition, it has been covered in clear, removable, Brodart, protective film. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Midnight Oil (which Wilfrid Sheed called a 'little Rolls Royce of a book' when it came out in 1972) opens in 1921: with 20 francs in his pocket, Pritchett arrives in Paris to commence a literary career. Gradually, his creative sensibilities emerge as he travels as a reporter to Ireland, Spain, and America. Midnight Oil provides an intimate and precise record of a writer's discovery of himself and his art. Ref BBB 7.

ISBN: 0 7011 1811 3 (Copyright Page)/7011 1811 3 (Dust Jacket). SYNOPSIS: The first volume of Mr Pritchett's autobiography, A Cab at the Door, is already a classic. In the second volume he is in Paris, caught up in the comedy of trying to earn his living and to become a spare time writer. By day the innocent young man works in a photographer's shop off the Boulevard des Italiens, swapping boots with the office boy and trying to pass as a Frenchman; or tramping around Paris selling glue or shellac, or shovelling copal gum in a paint factory. By night he is up in Montparnasse, hoping some of the genius in the cafes of that period will rub off on him. Few other books about being young in Paris in the early Twenties are so touching and almost ridiculously truthful. In the next six years he moves on to become a reporter, first in Ireland during the Civil Wary, and later in Spain where, in the tradition of Borrow, he travels over large stretches of that country on foot. Spain transforms him, as readers of The Spanish Temper will recall. He has become one of those whose life has been 'changed by a landscape'. Still later he is writing down the speech of the hillbillies in the mountains of Tennessee and at last gets back to London, broke and unknown, but equipped (as he says) with the 'foreign eye' that has given him his wit and originality as one of the most gifted short story writers, critics and travellers of his generation. This new volume is not a book of literary reminiscences; rather it is a very personal account of a self-education and the making of a writer. It describes how he lived and why he wrote. The book is packed with people brought to life by a truthful and compassionate observer. That great comic figure of the earlier volume, Mr Pritchett's Micawber-like father, appears in the narrative from time to time, in fuller bloom, while the son surveys the first forty years of his own life with a stoic honesty and humour. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
