Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -From the reviews: 'A good introduction to a subject important for its capacity to circumvent theoretical and practical obstacles, and therefore particularly prized in the applications of mathematics. The book presents a balanced view of the methods and their usefulness: integrals on the real line and in the complex plane which arise in different contexts, and solutions of differential equations not expressible as integrals. Murray includes both historical remarks and references to sources or other more complete treatments. More useful as a guide for self-study than as a reference work, it is accessible to any upperclass mathematics undergraduate. Some exercises and a short bibliography included. Even with E.T. Copson's Asymptotic Expansions or N.G. de Bruijn's Asymptotic Methods in Analysis (1958), any academic library would do well to have this excellent introduction.' (S. Puckette, University of the South) #Choice Sept. 1984#1 180 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -To the Second Edition This book is designed both for introductory courses in computer problem solving, at the freshman and sophomore college level, and for individual self study. The first edition of this book has been used for teaching introductory classes at University of California San Diego (UCSD), University of California Irvine (UCI), and many other schools. This second edition is based on our experience using the text over the past six years with a broad range of students. We have taught the course using variations on Keller's Personalized System of Instruction (PSI). The organization of this book is conducive to this approach but does not require it. PSI methods allow slightly more material to be absorbed by the students than is the case with the traditional lecture/recitation presentation. PSI allows grading according to the number of chapter units completed. In a 10 week quarter, virtually all students who pass the course at UCSDand UCI complete the material covered in the first eleven chapters and the exercises associated with them. A substantial portion complete the entire fifteen chapters. For a conventional presentation under the semester system, the 15 chapters should present an appropriate amount of material for the average student. 356 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Stratified fluids whose densities, sound speeds and other parameters are functions of a single depth coordinate occur widely in nature. Indeed, the earth's gravitational field imposes a stratification on its atmosphere, oceans and lakes. It is well known that their stratification has a profound effect on the propagation of sound in these fluids. The most striking effect is probably the occurrence of acoustic ducts, due to minima of the sound speed, that can trap sound waves and cause them to propagate hori zontally. The reflection, transmission and distortion of sonar signals by acoustic ducts is important in interpreting sonar echoes. Signal scattering by layers of microscopic marine organisms is important to both sonar engi neers and marine biologists. Again, reflection of signals from bottom sediment layers overlying a penetrable bottom are of interest both as sources of unwanted echoes and in the acoustic probing of such layers. Many other examples could be given. The purpose of this monograph is to develop from first principles a theory of sound propagation in stratified fluids whose densities and sound speeds are essentially arbitrary functions of the depth. In physical terms, the propagation of both time-harmonic and transient fields is analyzed. The corresponding mathematical model leads to the study of boundary value problems for a scalar wave equation whose coefficients contain the pre scribed density and sound speed functions. 212 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the fifties, one of the authors, G. Stampacchia, had prepared some lecture notes on ordinary differential equations for a course in ad analysis. These remained for a long time unused because he was no vanced longer very interested in the study of such equations. We now see, though, that numerous applications to biology, chemistry, economics, and medicine have recently been added to the traditional ones in mechanics; also, there has been in these last years a reemergence of interest in nonlinear analy sis, of which the theory of ordinary differential euqations is one of the principal sources of methods and problems. Hence the idea to write a book. Our text, based on the old notes and experience gained in many courses, seminars, and conferences, both in Italy and abroad, aims to give a simple and rapid introduction to the various themes, problems, and methods of the theory of ordinary differential equations. The book has been conceived in such a way so that even the reader who has merely had a first course in calculus may be able to study it and to obtain a panoramic vision of the theory. We have tried to avoid abstract formalism, preferring instead a discursive style, which should make the book accessible to engineers and physicists without specific preparation in modern mathematics. For students of mathematics, it pro vides motivation for the subject of more advanced analysis courses. 400 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These notes on regression give an introduction to some of the techniques that I have found useful when working with various data sets in collaboration with Dr. S. Keiding (Copenhagen) and Dr. J.W.L. Robinson (Lausanne). The notes are based on some lectures given at the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, University of Copenhigen, 1978-81, for graduate students, and assumes a familiarity with statistical theory corresponding to the book by C.R. Rao: 'Linear Statistical Inference and its Applications'. Wiley, New York (1973) . The mathematical tools needed for the algebraic treatment of the models are some knowledge of finite dimensional vector spaces with an inner product and the notion of orthogonal projection. For the analytic treatment I need characteristic functions and weak convergence as the main tools. The most important statistical concepts are the general linear model for Gaussian variables and the general methods of maximum likelihood estimation as well as the likelihood ratio test. All these topics are presented in the above mentioned book by Rao and the reader is referred to that for details. For convenience a short appendix is added where the fundamental concepts from linear algebra are discussed. 136 pp. Englisch.
