"The history of Dodnash Priory, one of numerous Augustinian priories founded in East Anglia in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, has hitherto been totally obscure. The two hundred original charters edited here now show that it was founded by Wimer the chaplain, sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk and a prominent servant of Henry II, and that although always small it played a disproportionately large part in the economic and social life of south-east Suffolk for the next three centuries. The early charters include the first known references to Flatford Mill at East Bergholt; later documents relate to serious flooding at the end of the thirteenth century, and soon thereafter to the leasing of estates in order to adapt to new economic conditions. As always, the charters provide much information about local lay society as well as the canons themselves." (Publisher). Book.

The concentration of wealth represented by a city was a valuable objective, and the static nature of a siege was infinitely preferable to the uncertainties of campaign. As the incidence of sieges increased, so pitched battles declined. The studies in this book, intended for specialists as well as general readers, follow the history of siege warfare, exploring the urban milieu within which it developed, and the evolution of siege technology up to the advent of gunpowder weaponry. The logistics of specific sieges, from the Crusader kingdoms in the Near East and the Byzantine Empire as well as medieval Europe, are also considered, with evidence from literature, engineering, architecture and cliometrics. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. "The theme of "Adam's Grace" is the interplay of theology and literature across a wide range of genres and vernaculars: in particular, the use of medieval literary texts to explain the balance of the Fall and Redemption, the universality of original sin, and the identity of mankind with its first parents, Adam and Eve. The process begins with the Christian tradition of apocryphal Adam-lives, which live on and develop in many vernaculars. Later, Adam is used as a literary model, on whom many well-known Christian figures of the middle ages - knights, popes, emperors, kings and saints - can be seen to be based. They include Gregorius, the 'medieval Oedipus', whose case demonstrates the resolution of the paradox of the felix culpa; Parzival, searching for the Holy Grail and for God in the hostile world into which he has been ejected; and the many medieval figures (literary and even historical) associated with the legends of leprosy, blood and healing which reflect the sacrifice in the Redemption. The last part of the book looks at the drama, first of all the medieval representations of the Fall and the Passion, and then the rather different portrayal of Adam on stage in the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. Brian Murdoch is Professor of German at Stirling University. " (Publisher). Book.

"Many of the millions of medieval charters surviving in European archives and repositories were written without any reference to a date of issue. The proliferation of undated charters in England and Normandy indicates that the custom was especially peculiar to lands under Norman rule, but charters issued by major religious houses are often also undated. The DEEDS Project at the University of Toronto has developed a computerised methodology for dating charters, relying on analysis of vocabulary, syntax and formulae. In this volume, an international group of scholars concerned with the problem of charter chronology consider the potential of the computerised methodology compared to other more traditional methods of dating, such as identification of names, changing in wording and address, and handwriting. Discussion also touches on regional differences in the production, use and distribution of charters, and on ways both manual and mechanical to date and analyse the content of large numbers of them. "Here are very full abstracts, fully indexed, of wills proved in the courts of the Archdeacon of Suffolk in the early seventeenth century. Early wills make compulsive reading, and also supply invaluable information for social and economic historians, local historians and genealogists. This edition brings out indications of the religious and political beliefs of the testator, and also evidence of personal relationships - 'refractory' son, for instance -and commitments to learning and to apprenticeships. Household goods, often listed with an intensity of feeling, furnish the mind's eye with early Stuart interiors, and place-names reveal old customs and associations. Several bequests for education, religious instruction and the relief of the poor also illuminate the preoccupations of the local society of the period. " (Publisher). Book.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. A very heavy volume that will require additional postage ."Ipswich received its first charter from King John in 1200; the Corporation records survive from 1255, placing the borough archive among the earliest in England, antedated only by Leicester, Shrewsbury, Wallingford, London and Exeter. The archive is particularly rich in records of the medieval courts, most notably perhaps those of the Court of Petty Pleas, whose cases touched almost every aspect of town life, and those of the Petty Court of Recognizances - in effect a register of deeds furnishing a detailed record of transactions involving burgage tenements. The financial records of Treasurer and Chamberlains are particularly detailed for the Elizabethan and Stuart periods, and much social history is contained in the records of various town charities. This catalogue, published to celebrate the 800th anniversary of John's charter, includes all the surviving records of the old Corporation down to its dissolution in 1835, thus facilitating access to an unjustly neglected major source for the history of Suffolk. It also features two contextual essays: The Government of Ipswich from its Origins to c. 1550 by Geoffrey Martin (former Keeper of the Rolls) and The Government of Ipswich from c.1550-1835 by Frank Grace (Lecturer, Suffolk College). Dr David Allen is on the staff of the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich and editor of the "Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History"." (Publisher). Book.

The concentration of wealth represented by a city was a valuable objective; success, even if less immediate, was more easily confirmed by subsequent administrative arrangements; and logistically, the static nature of a siege was infinitely preferable to the uncertainties of campaign. As the incidence of sieges increased, so pitched battles declined. The studies in this book, intended for specialists as well as general readers, offer new scholarships on medieval military history. They follow the history of siege warfare, exploring the urban milieu within which it developed, and the evolution of siege technology up to the advent of gunpowder weaponry. The logistics of specific sieges - not only in medieval Europe, but also in the Crusader kingdoms in the Near East and the Byzantine Empire - are carefully delineated, resulting in a valuable comparative perspective. Evidence drawn from archaeology, literature, engineering, architecture and cliometrics brings to life the realities of a siege campaign. In exploration of its practical details, light is shed upon the perennial question of the relationship of medieval strategy with that of classical antiquity and the Renaissance. " (Publisher).
