It is primarily an introduction to image~thinking and picture~reading in Indian art and thought, and it seeks to make the profound Hindu and Buddhist intuitions of the riddles of life and death recognizable not merely as Oriental but as universal elements. "In a book which is enormously scholarly, though completely unassuming in its erudition, and so persuasive through the formal beauty and clarity of its style as to make it deservedly a classic of exegetic prose, Dr. Zimmer relates the basic myths that lie behind the forms of Indian art and civilization that produced them. Dr. Zimmer . sensed how the images, the revelations of the sages, 'were moulded into a comprehensive system of thought ascribing an order to the world, into an ethical regulation of human actions, and into a mighty far~spread and ancient institution called church or religion.' . It is rarely in any branch of knowledge that one encounters such an illumination of the whole subject, an investigation that is as brilliant as it is profound." ~Benjamin Rowland, Jr. Myths and Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization was prepared by Joseph Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces (Bollingen/Princeton) from extensive notes left by the great German Indologist Heinrich Zimmer at his death in New York in 1943. It was followed by three other volumes (also in Bollingen Series) reconstructed from materials that Zimmer left unfinished: The King and the Corpse, Philosophies of India, and The Art of Indian Asia. Of these, the first two titles are also available in Princeton/Bollingen paperbacks.

In the sphere of religious practices and in psychology it denotes circular images, which are drawn, painted, modelled, or danced. Plastic structures of this kind are to be found, for instance, in Tibetan Buddhism, and as dance figures these circular patterns occur also in Dervish monasteries. As psychological phenomena they appear spontaneously in dreams, in certain states of conflict, and in cases of schizophrenia. Very frequently they contain a quaternity or a multiple of four, in the form of a cross, a star, a square, an octagon, etc. In alchemy we encounter this motif in the form of quadratura circuli. " ~ from "Mandalas". In his Memories, Dreams, Reflections, Jung tells of how he painted the first mandala, in 1916, after writing "Seven Sermons to the Dead." Mandala forms had fascinated Jung from the beginning of his career, and, indeed, Jung's discovery of the mandala provided the key to his entire system. The present volume contains two important papers on mandala symbolism, with many illustrations (78 halftone plates, of which 28 are in color), and a useful popular summary of the subject. These paperback editions of C. G. Jung's writings are chosen from the Collected Works, translated by R.F.C. Hull and published in twenty~one volumes as Bollingen Series XX. The excerpts are selected and grouped thematically to introduce Jung's writings on issues and themes of contemporary interest. The present paperback contains essays from The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, Volume 9, part 1, of the Collected Works.

Trade Paperback. Condición: Fine. Hoffman, Helmut - Drawings Ilustrador. Second Printing. 256 Pages Indexed. No defects noted. Indterior text and illustrations are flawless. is book presents a series of photographs and short descriptions of fossils, both animal and plant. It is for the amateur fossil collector to use in the field or home but is also a gallery of remarkable photographs which should delight any natural history enthusiast. In his foreword to the original German text Professor Mayr drew to the reader's attention just how extraordinary is the profusion of fossils to be found in the sedimentary rocks around us. They provide abundant evidence of the evolution of life in the past. The amateur collector is almost immediately faced with the problems of identifying and categorizing his materials and of understanding something of the classification of both animals and plants. For example the mollusc group, which since the beginning of Cambrian time some 570 million years ago has revealed about 100,000 different genera. A good college text-book of palaeontology can only deal with a small fraction of this number, and a guide such as this makes do with 180 or so. These are, however, the invertebrate fossils one finds most commonly in the field. This book has a representative selection of all such fossil groups. There is brief general diagnoses of some of the more common kinds of fossils and a listing of the essential characteristics of the genus depicted. The collection of specimens which forms the basis of these illustrations is in the Bavarian State Museum of Palaeontology and Historical Geology in Munich. Such fossils, or others very like them, are of course found not only in southern Germany but in many countries beyond the boundaries of Bavaria. Professor Mayr was able to reduce the descriptive text to an admirable minimum without losing its value, and we have followed his lead. There are already several pocket guides to fossils; each has its limitations. This little volume presents a unique collection of excellent photographs of uncommonly well-preserved material.Illustrated with more than 500 color photos. Contents: Introduction, Animal Fossils, Plant Fossils, Forms Resembling Fossils, Further Reading, and Glossary.

One of the most important figures in Ottoman history, Mehmed was the architect of victories that inspired fear throughout Europe and contributed to an image of the Turk prevalent in Western art and literature for many years. "Fascinating . From the Western viewpoint, Mehmed was seen as the man who gave the death blow to Byzantium, destroying the last vestige of the Eastern Roman Empire. Not surprisingly, the Turks regard him as the greatest of all sultans, a figure unparalleled in the history of the world for military prowess, statecraft, patronage of the arts and sciences." ~Robert Kirsch, The Los Angeles Times Book Review. "The definitive scholarly biography of the Ottoman emperor who in 1453 conquered Constantinople . Mehmed's career is a study of battle, murder, and sudden death, of brutality, perfidy, and spite, with no moral superiority awardable to either Christians or Muslims." ~The New Yorker.
