Cloth. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback First Edition Since the first edition of Monty Python's Flying Circus was transmitted on 5th October, 1969, the name of Python has seared itself into the public consciousness in a way unrivalled by any other group of twentieth century humourists. This book, writted by an acclaimed historian of the British cinema, who is also a friend and contemporary of the Pythons, closely examines the enormours creative output from this unique band of comedians. Based on interviews with the Pythons and others associated with them, the author profiles each of the team in depth for the first time - John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam - describing their backgrounds, their education, and individual creative achievements. Copiously illustrated with stills and memorabilia, the book provides as objective and authoritative an account as possible of The Life of Python, and manages to avoid the twin pitfalls of over-analytical pseudery or a flippancy that could only trivialise the remarkable international achievements of these six extraordinarily talented individuals. Slight shelfwear to D/J(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

Cloth. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. In September 1987, Mike Gatting's men set out on the most extensive winter of touring ever undertaken by an England team and also one of the most controversial. Among the press contingent travelling with the England party was the author, cricket correspondent of The Observer and a writer well qualified to produce this definitive account. Drawing on his knowledge of the sub-continent, Berry describes the excitement generated by the vast crowds at the first World Cup to be staged outside England, and the colourful diversity of the teams gathered from all the Test-playing countries. Sketching in the exotic settings, he follows England's halting progress to the unexpected showdown in the Calcutta final against Alan Border's suddenly resurgent Australians - a defeat partially avenged three months later in Sydney when for three days England abruptly departed from the Bicentennial script before returning to New Zealand. The middle section of this book is devoted to the Test series in Pakistan, arguably the most acrimonious series since Bodyline. It will be best remembered for some stormy confrontations following strange umpiring decisions, as well as displays of petulance and ill-chosen words - sadly not even confined to the sub-continent. Pausing to explain the Byzantine complexities of Pakistani life as well as the immediate background to the tour, the author examines the umpiring uproar in Lahore, when England were hastened to an innings defeat which Abdul Qadir could well have achieved without extra help, and the subsequent Faisalabad Affairs, to which he finds an interesting historical parallel. Illustrated. Very slight wear to D/J.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Herbert Warren Wind (August 11, 1916 - May 30, 2005) was an American sportswriter. Wind began writing for The New Yorker in 1941, covered golf and sometimes other sports for that weekly magazine from 1947 until 1953, and again from 1960 until his retirement in 1990. From 1954 to 1960, he covered golf and sometimes other sports for Sports Illustrated magazine. Although associated with golf, Wind wrote articles on a wide range of sports including tennis, basketball, and football. In 1958, Wind coined the phrase 'Amen Corner' to describe the second shot at the 11th, all of the 12th, and the tee shot at the 13th hole at the Augusta National Golf Club, site of the Masters Tournament. Wind was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2008 in the Lifetime Achievement category. Small envelop addressed to Wind, and Wind collection slip laid in. The author played soccer for Cambridge University and Pegasus, and in 1956 was in the training squad for the British Olympic soccer team. On leaving Cambridge, he joined The Times and became soccer correspondent of the Sunday Telegraph when it began publication in 1961. In 1982 he returned to The Times as chief sports correspondent. He was the author of numerous books on Sports. 1966 was possibly the most significant date in British sporting history, when England staged the World Cup, and Alf Ramsey's team won it for the first time in front of ecstatic home crowds--and football fever gripped the nation. The story is enriched with personal reminiscences from the players themselves, and a wealth of archive photographs guaranteed to heighten the nostalgia for those heady summer days when Moore, Charlton, Hurst and Co. restored British footballing pride. In a wonderfully nostalgic book, David Miller recaptures the heady days of summer 1966 when England won the World Cup in front of their own euphoric fans. Forty years on, he evokes the eager anticipation with which Britain awaited the arrival of the world''s best footballers; how the England team and its tactics took shape in the run up to the competition; the new wingless formation and the widespread criticism from the press and the public. This general pessimism gave way to mass adulation as England vindicated the revolutionary tactics of manager Alf Ramsey. The book includes profiles of the England players and their manager and assesses the major competition from Europe and South America. Detailed is the progress of the team, their injuries, and controversies, through to the final against West Germany.
