Einband berieben und bestossen, papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The new sociological theories examined in An Excursion into Creative Sociology argue that people constantly shape their own social worlds through interaction with others and are not merely acted upon by social facts or social forces. These creative sociologies opposed to the assumption that human behavior is determined solely by social structure and sharing a resistance to the use of natural science methods in the study of social phenomena-have called for special methods for the understanding of uniquely human processes. A succinct introduction provides the rationale for the approaches discussed: ethnomethodology, symbolic and neo-symbolic interactionism, phenomenological sociology (including existential phenomenology), the sociology of knowledge, and the sociology of the absurd. Monica Morris's study clarifies these intriguing jargon which has previously left these new sociological theories inaccessible. Each approach and its antecedents are thoroughly discussed, highlighting the similarities between and the differences among them. In addition, valuable brief summaries are provided of the ideas of the major proponents of the various schools, including the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, Max Weber, and Alfred Schutz; the symbolic interactionism of George Herbert Mead, Herbert Blumer, and Erving Goffman; and the ethnomethodology of Harold Garfinkel. Additional attention is given to the distinctions within ethnomethodology; the view that ethnomethodology provides a totally new theoretical model is contrasted with the view that ethnomethodology is not genuinely new.
