Les loges maçonniques de la Grande Loge de France travaillent de manière quasi exclusive au Rite écossais ancien et accepté. Fondé sur la base des Grandes Constitutions de 1786, attribuées à Frédéric II de Prusse, il est apparu en France grâce au frère Grasse-Tilly en 1804, alors qu'il revenait des "Isles d'Amérique. ". La Loge Union et Bienfaisance est créée à Gentilly en 1866. Dès sa création, tous les fondateurs se revendiquent comme des "maçons libres dans une loge libre".
