Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Paperback. At one time the education and social training of young children was the responsibility of parents and teachers. In the last thirty years the structure of our society has changed and this responsibility has come to be shared by a number of other people: nursery nurses, classroom assistants, foster parents, child minders, residential social workers, playgroup helpers, the staff of daycare centres. At the same time we have been made aware of how important to their ultimage development are the experiences young children have in the early years of their lives. This means that the standards of care for children are high and demanding. This book will be invaluable to all who work with young children since it provides a basic framework of human growth and development in the early years. It does not set out to give advice or to offer methods for practical situations, but it makes clear some of the factors involved in the day-to-day work and shows how important it is to watch how children behave and to act on what we learn about them and what we know about ourselves. 188 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 8th Impression. Paperback. Presenting an anlytical treatment of the central question of why war broke out when it did, the author opens up new perspectives on the outbreak, exploring the major themes which explain the development of international affairs down to 1939. By looking at the war in the context of economic and political rivalry between the major states, as well as rearmament and domestic policies, the author shows how the war's origins are to be found in the basic instability of the international system brought about by the relative decline of the old empires and the rise of the new industrial powers. 129 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. The South-East to AD 1000. Tiny pen mark to bottom edge. Very slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Sunned spine to D/J. This is the first full acoount of the South East (the modern counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex) from the first appearance of Man in Britain to the Early Middle Ages. Through a synthesis of the findings of archaeological research the authors present the development of human culture in the region from before 300,000 BC. Their particular emphasis on economic archaeology enables them to uncover the region's trade and redistribution networks. These reveal the insular nature of much of the South-East's development, despite its contacts with other parts of Britain and Europe. The authors discuss the producers of wealth - farmers, craftsmen, peasants, serfs and slaves - rather than those who simply manipulated it. They find continuity in the development of farming practiece but a concomitant discontinuity in ceremonial and social organisation. Intesive development, road construction and especially ploughing, have destroyed many archaeological sites in South East England. Fortunately key sites have been saved by archaeologists working under rescue conditions. This book is written by three archaeologists who have attempted to follow research themes through their rescue archaeology. This combined with the increasing refinement of archaeological recovery techniques has resulted in a book which contains a wealth of new data and ideas, and it will be widely welcomed by readers both in and out of the South East, and marks a further important addition to this distinguished series. Illustrated. 384 pp.

Cloth. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. The South East From AD 1000. Sunned spine to D/J. In this latest volume, the author examine the history of the people who have lived in the South East of England - in practice the modern counties of Surrey, kent, East and West Sussex and Greater London south of the Thames - from late Anglo-Saxon times to the present. Although London itself is not given separate treatment in the sweries, its growing influence on settlement, transport, economy and society in even the most distant corners of the South East is, inevitably, one of the major features of the book. The authors have two principal concerns: to describe the development of the community across the thousand-year span; and to examine the changes to the physical setting in which it takes place. Landscape and society are thus given equal emphasis throughout. The authors pay due attention to the great historical events that have had an impact on the region - wars, plagues, technological change and socio-cultural trends amongst them - but they are also at pains to stress the underlying continuity of rual and urban life. As well as exploring the interaction of economic, social and landscape history, the author also acknowledge the cultural dimension of the ordinary lives they are describing: they show how people themselves became increasingly aware of their environment, and how the landscape has in its turn influenced the art and literature of those who live within it. But the picture is not one of unclouded progress. The authors identify the South East today as one of the problem regions of the developed world, with dense settlement, severe competition for land, and the accelerating erosion of ehat countryside remains. One of ther strongest features in this admirable book is the attention it gives to explaining such contemporary problems through an understanding of their historical origins. The authors move with equal confidence from remote hamlets in the Sussex Downs to the crowded tenements of Lambeth, from prosperous market towns like Ashford, Guildford and Tonbridge to the avenues, crescents and closes of South London's surburbia. All have made theior distinctive contribution to the South East as it is today, and all find their appropriate place in the splendidly readable survey. Illustrated. 444 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
