Originally published in Russia in 2002 and just translated into English, we now have a volume that- because of its guiding principle that ''icons are intended primarily for prayer''- demonstrates theological and devotional sensitivity without sacrificing historical comprehensiveness and learned art-critical analysis. It represents the efforts of nine contributors, each examining particular topics, historical periods, or schools of iconography. Chapters include: Theological Principles, the Technique of Icon Painting, Byzantine Icons of 6th to 15th Centuries, Greek and Cretan Iconography After the Fall of Byzantium, Mediaeval Russian Icons, Georgian Icons, Icons of Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Romanian Icons, Russian Icons of the 18th to Early 20th Centuries, and Icons of the 20th Century. The format of the book blends the sturdiness of a textbook (it has in fact been officially recommended by the Russian Orthodox Church for use in Russian schools) with the beauty of a coffee-table book. Each of its 250 pages contains one to three (brilliantly) full-color plates, carefully linked to the text; and useful appendices include a table of types of inscriptions and a twenty-page detailed chronology of the history of iconography. 287 pp.
