Octavo, blood orange boards (hardcover), black letters, 112 pp. Near-Fine, with small former-owner signature; in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: High-pitched Hum is a gut-level novel of unusual depth and poignancy. The moving story of the destruction of a young boy's mind by the violence and hate around him, it is both timely and timeless. Jason, the boy, has many dreams -- most of them bad -- and with good reason. His guilt in connection with his father's death haunts him. While his love for his grandfather, Daddy Bob, sustains him, he finds it difficutl to live up to Daddy Bob's maxim -- "It's how a man handles his fear that makes him a man." Jason's mother, a woman by any man's standards, seems to care more for her pleasure than for Jason. And the other characters' hatred, depravity, and ignorance make life difficult for the boy. This is a gripping tale, a story of southern rural poverty, a story of degradation, a s tory of the confusion that besets young minds and tears at them until they are stripped of their humanity -- and sometimes their sanity. Literature, Realistic Fiction, Coming of Age, Mental Health. bslic.
