Jacob Stevens soon followed, building a sawmill and gristmill on what became Stevens Brook in the center village. Ten power sites on this short brook ran lumber, textile, and other mills, as well as a tannery. Bridgton became the area's commercial center as retail stores and businesses sprang up to support the many mill workers and farm families. The first train on the narrow-gauge Bridgton and Saco River Railroad chugged into town in January 1883. Tourists and artists soon discovered Bridgton, and today the town remains a diverse mix of creative, hardworking people. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Created by the Ohio legislature in 1820 and named for Revolutionary War hero David Williams, Williams County is situated in the northwest corner of Ohio, bordered by Michigan on the north and Indiana on the west. In the early 1830s, settlers began pouring into the county, primarily farm families seeking inexpensive land and new lives on the frontier. Many were European immigrants or the children of immigrants willing to perform the backbreaking labor necessary to clear and drain the forests and convert them into fertile farmlands. Arrival of the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad in 1854 opened new markets for local agricultural products and small industries and gave birth to bustling new communities along the rail line. The strong work ethic, faith, entrepreneurial spirit, and sense of community that has characterized the people of Williams County--past and present--has worked a wonderful transformation, turning a wilderness into fine farms and communities offering modern public facilities and services, numerous businesses and industries, and a high quality of life in a rural setting. 130 pp. Englisch.

Originally created as Cahawba County in 1818, Bibb County made use of its land, river, and resources to produce the iron, coal, and timber that fueled the growth of Alabama and our nation. The area provided the arsenals for the Confederacy and contributed to the simple task of heating homes. Industrial growth throughout the state has the county to thank. Bibb County boasts the largest timber operations east of the Rocky Mountains, and this timber is shipped all over the world. Today Bibb County is home to some of the South's most treasured places. The county boasts Tannehill and Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Parks, Talledega National Forest, Oakmulgee Wildlife Management Area, and the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. 130 pp. Englisch.

Ranchos covered the most fertile lands in San Diego and produced grain, vegetables, and fruits and grazed thousands of head of cattle, sheep, and horses. The dons and donas who owned the ranchos were wealthy in land and cattle and built large adobe ranch-house complexes. The Kumeyaay, Luiseno, and Cupeno were the backbone of the ranchos, providing the labor needed to run a successful ranch. Daily life of the dons, donas, and their families included the Californio traditions of family and religion, dancing and fiestas, roundups and rodeos, and generous hospitality. Many of the ranchos no longer exist. Those that are preserved provide a window into California's past.' 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the late 1600s and early 1700s, the French established forts, such as Fort de Chartres, in the mid-Mississippi Valley, as well as villages, such as River des Peres and Mine la Motte. Ste. Genevieve was founded in the late 1740s when French Canadians settled on the rich soil of the floodplain. They built homes, cultivated crops (including corn and cotton), and mined the rich veins of lead and the bluffs for stone. The great flood of 1785, referred to by early residents as l'annee des grandes eaux, swept away the tiny village, and the mighty Mississippi River reclaimed its riverbed, forcing residents to move their village several miles farther west to higher ground. Today much of the early French culture remains in the numerous 18th- and 19th-century Creole houses that line the ancient streets. Germans began to arrive in the early 1800s and left their mark using the abundant clay and limestone for brick buildings and limestone houses. Ste. Genevieve is dotted with landmarks: the famous Bolduc House, the 'post-in-the-ground' Amoureux House, the Felix Valle House, and many other historic and architectural treasures.' 130 pp. Englisch.

The lake's unusual water chemistry produces algae and brine shrimp, feeding millions of birds and creating strange mineral formations called tufa, for which the lake is famed. From the early days of the Kuzedika Paiutes to the arrival of miners and settlers in the late 19th century, the lake has stood sentinel for the surrounding camps, mines, and towns. Around the lake, the town of Lee Vining has served travelers and residents since 1926, and Carson Camp has been a recreational destination for generations. Some of the world's earliest hydroelectric plants were established here, and Los Angeles began diverting streams and channeling their waters beneath the Mono Craters to the city's aqueduct in the 1940s. Impacts of those water diversions gradually became apparent, generating controversy around this otherwise placid landscape. 130 pp. Englisch.

Dalton was created when the Western and Atlantic Railroad was built to connect Atlanta with Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1863, during the Civil War, this small town became a battle scene along Gen. William T. Sherman's march, with both armies occupying the community. After the war, the leading citizens built Crown Cotton Mill and Village to expand the town's economy. In 1895, fifteen-year-old Catherine Evans hand-tufted a bedspread, ushering in the bedspread and tufted carpet bonanzas. With the invention of tufting machines in the 1930s and 1940s, Dalton boomed as carpet companies, supply houses, bedspread lines, and retail outlets brought wealth to the city. At one point, there were more millionaires per capita in Dalton than anywhere in the country. Today Dalton is growing with the help of a diverse Hispanic labor force and continues to be the Carpet Capital of the World. 130 pp. Englisch.

Mansions and bungalows housed bankers and merchants who commuted to their businesses downtown, as well as moviemakers, debutantes, the social elite, and one or two scoundrels. Anchored by Adams Boulevard, this area just west of downtown has been through many changes. Today the neighborhood is one of the most racially and architecturally diverse in the country and contains the highest concentration of historic cultural monuments in Los Angeles. Residents and local archives, including the University of Southern California and the Automobile Club of Southern California, have contributed images to this volume illustrating life and architecture from Victorian times onward. 130 pp. Englisch.

It answered the call in Vietnam, the Middle East, the Balkans, and most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. Celebrating 60 years of service, it has become a well-known local institution. In 1805, Lewis and Clark navigated the river 20 miles south of Dillon and met peacefully with the Shoshone tribe. Settlement was sparse until the discovery of gold in 1862, when the town of Bannack sprang up overnight to become the first territorial capital. The number of towns in the county grew quickly with new discoveries of gold, silver, lead, and copper. Other settlers came to raise cattle and sheep and to cultivate hay and grain. As these new arrivals flooded the area, the resident Shoshone and Bannock tribes were displaced from their land and banished to a reservation in Idaho. The first railroad came up from Corinne, Utah, in 1880, and new communities were established along the tracks. While the mining settlements eventually declined, the rail towns survived, and today many ghost towns remain in Beaverhead County as a reminder of the not-so-distant past. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -For seven months in 1904, St. Louis was the greatest city on earth. Millions flocked to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition to behold the inventions of the early 20th century. Many saw electric lights, automobiles, aircraft, and moving pictures for the first time. At a time when few traveled more than a couple miles from home, visitors encountered the people and cultures of faraway lands. It was an educational experience, a 'university of mankind.' The Pike offered amusement rides, wild animal displays, and fanciful trips through the Hereafter and Creation exhibits. Fairgoers visited the Alps, the North Pole, Russia, and Paris and witnessed famous battles. Everyone wanted to ride the great Observation Wheel. There were hootchy-kootchy dancers and wonderful new foods, such as the ice-cream cone. But it was all temporary, a dream city made to last only a few months. With the exception of today's St. Louis Art Museum, the grand palaces are gone. St. Louis: The 1904 World's Fair tells the story of the greatest Victorian-era world's fair since the lights of the fair faded over a century ago, while also examining the fair's legacies and legends. 130 pp. Englisch.

Founded three years before Washington was admitted to the Union, Roslyn became a boomtown after the discovery of coal. Coal was king in Roslyn for 80 years, and immigrants came from all over the world to work the mines. Roslyn's remarkable history includes stories of murder, a mine strike that ended with the mine boss tied to the railroad tracks, and a bank robbery some claim was masterminded by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Readers will meet characters like Tony Bailey--he turned out to be a she--who worked the mines for 11 months in 1949 before being arrested one night in a tavern for going into the women's bathroom dressed as a man. And no book about Roslyn would be complete without a chapter on the hit television series Northern Exposure, which was filmed there. 130 pp. Englisch.

In 1847, the townspeople built their first post office, and the Lexington and Big Sandy Railroad laid tracks through town, opening the area for even greater development. Named for the estate of Kentuckian Henry Clay, the city of Ashland was made official by an act of legislature in 1856. 130 pp. Englisch.

This gentle intersection of waterways was to become the junction of railroads, highways, and so many people's lives. The seeds of the hopes and dreams of early pioneers where planted in the fertile soil. Nurtured by the promise of the railroad, the town began to grow and earned the honor of becoming the county seat. With the building of the railroad, Red Oak Junction was regarded second only to Deadwood as a wild outpost on the western frontier. With the completion of the railroad, the laborers left, taking that reputation with them, and Red Oak blossomed into a booming city directed by the strong personalities of the city fathers who sought to have it be a leader of culture, building, technological improvements, and businesses in the state. Fires, grasshoppers, hailstorms, and floods could not dampen the indomitable spirit of those who have lived in Red Oak through the years. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Fort Monroe was once a powerful symbol of America's national defense system. From 1823 to 1945, its primary military mission was to protect Hampton Roads and the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay from enemy attacks. Over the years, as military technology advanced, Fort Monroe's defensive posture changed. To counter potential threats, American coastal defense installations such as Fort Monroe developed sophisticated steel disappearing guns, mortars, anti-aircraft weapons, and submarine mines. As the site of the army's Coast Artillery School, Fort Monroe trained thousands of soldiers. After World War II, Fort Monroe's role as a coastal defense installation ended, and the post took on new missions as a training headquarters facility. With more than 200 original photographs, this volume unveils the layered history of this massive stone-and-brick installation from the end of the Civil War to the present. This volume will highlight more than 140 years of images that capture Fort Monroe's varied missions, historic buildings, the families who lived there, the resort hotels, and other aspects of this unique national landmark. 130 pp. Englisch.

The roots of prehistoric habitation run deep along the Santa Cruz River, reaching back thousands of years. Later the river attracted 17th-century Spanish explorers, who brought military government, the church, and colonists to establish the northern outpost of their New World empire. Later still, American westward expansion drew new settlers to the place called Tucson. Today Tucson is a bustling multicultural community of more than one million residents. These images from the photographic archives of the Arizona Historical Society tell the stories of individuals and cultures that transformed a 19th-century frontier village into a 20th-century desert city. 130 pp. Englisch.

Its extraordinary vistas, together with its extensive grounds and stables, would subsequently attract a series of residents that not only included two presidents, but also some of the most eminent senators, cabinet officers, generals, and socialites of their respective eras. In a sense, the history of Woodley is a history of the nation. This volume contains 200 years of images that detail the history of the house and the men and women who lived there. In doing so, it persuasively supports the contention that, with the single exception of the White House, no house in America can boast a roster of residents comparable to that of Woodley. 130 pp. Englisch.

The town was established on the Connecticut River in 1634 and boasts a well-documented Colonial history, as well as an enviable array of historic homes and public buildings that illustrate three centuries of community life. The vintage images in Wethersfield testify to the town's more recent transformation from a rural agricultural hamlet of 2,700 in 1900 to a densely settled suburb of over 26,000 inhabitants today. As one of the oldest European-settled areas in the Unites States, the stockade contains the highest concentration of historic buildings in the country. During the early 19th century, the stockade had become a center for business, but a major fire in 1819 swept most of it away. Remarkably, more than 40 buildings have remained a part of the landscape for more than two centuries. As a result, a mix of architecture from 17th-century Dutch to modern exists within the four blocks that make up the stockade. Through photographs and maps, Schenectady's Stockade: New York's First Historic District tells the story of one of America's earliest communities. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As Detroit developed northward from the riverfront, Woodward Avenue became a mecca for retail, restaurants, and services. The 1870s and 1880s saw many independent merchants open their doors. By 1890, a new type of one-stop shopping had developed: the department store. Detroit's venerable Newcomb Endicott and Company was closely followed by other trailblazers: J. L. Hudson Company, Crowley Milner and Company, and the Ernst Kern Company. At its peak in the 1950s, the Woodward Avenue area boasted over four million square feet of retail, making it one of America's preferred retail destinations. Other Detroit emporiums such as the homegrown S. S. Kresge Company set trends in consumer culture. Generations made the trek downtown for back-to-school events, Easter shows, holiday windows, and family luncheons. Then, with the advent of suburban shopping centers, downtown stores began competing with their own branch locations. By the 1970s and 1980s, the dominoes began to fall as both chain and independent stores abandoned the once prosperous Woodward Avenue. 130 pp. Englisch.

It was the people who settled in the town that helped to shape it. The lumber barons provided the financial backing to begin banking and insurance institutions and served as officers of every major business and governmental agency in town. It became the base of activities for Eastern tycoons' families enjoying the balmy Southern California climate, even fostering the development of the winter mansions on Orange Grove Avenue. After the original 200-room hotel with 80 chimneys burned down on Easter Sunday in 1895, the second 300-room Raymond Hotel opened in 1901. The pioneering orange groves on the sprawling grounds gave way to a golf course. Pres. Theodore Roosevelt and Charles Chaplin are just two examples of the early-20th-century celebrities who stayed there. This visually stunning collection of images is a mere sample of the vintage professional photography that exists of South Pasadena's iconic landmark. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Located on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, the site that became Federal Way was first settled by loggers, who in the 1860s began using the shore along Puget Sound for easy access to the extensive timber available inland. By the 1880s, about 50 homesteaders had filed claims in the Greater Federal Way area. Five small communities with individual school districts were established. When the five school districts consolidated in 1929, the new school was given the name Federal Way School because of the recently built, federally funded highway that passed nearby. Eventually the entire community came to be known as Federal Way. Still a relatively rural place up until the 1950s, Federal Way has grown exponentially since that time and is now the eighth largest city in Washington. 130 pp. Englisch.

Pioneer farmers in the early 20th century diversified, working in creameries and the sugar beet and oil industries. Post-World War II suburbia expanded eastward, influencing the dairymen to incorporate in 1955 as the city of Dairyland to save their rural lifestyle--a trendsetting notion that received national attention. The school districts vigorously acquired land by eminent domain so that tiny La Palma contains five districts within its boundaries. Unable to halt tract building, the dairy farmers continued their bold, forward-thinking initiatives for the renamed 'La Palma' in 1965 by creating a master plan that included the first underground utilities in the county. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Elko County, located in the northeast corner of Nevada, is the fourth largest county in the continental United States. Miles and miles of sagebrush give way to scenic spots, such as Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains, and locals are proud of this ruggedly beautiful land. Although the county's area is vast, there are only 2.5 people per square mile, and almost 90 percent of the land is owned by the federal government. The major towns in Elko County were established in the late 1860s, when the railroad arrived and brought ranching and mining jobs to the area. In the 1930s, Elko County began attracting big-name entertainment and also became a destination for gaming, and those traditions continue today. With its rich heritage and unique, high-desert landscapes, Elko County is considered one of the last frontiers of the Old West. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 1883, a group of women, concerned about conditions for children in Cincinnati's hospitals, proposed establishing a hospital for children. The hospital was incorporated in November 1883 and opened a few months later in a rented three-bedroom house. The hospital admitted 38 children in its first year, and Episcopal bishop Thomas Jaggar, president of the board of trustees, reported that it offered its young patients 'the best medical and surgical treatment' as well as 'the tenderest care'--a description as true today as it was 125 years ago. From its modest beginnings, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has become one of the nation's most distinguished centers for pediatric care, research, and education. It is a trusted resource in Greater Cincinnati and a national and international referral center. Scientists at Cincinnati Children's have made research contributions that have advanced pediatric medicine at home and around the world. 130 pp. Englisch.
